This Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) was seen in the bird aviary, in the Iguacu falls bird sanctuary. This species is classified as vulnerable, since it is a threatened species due to deforestation. Unique bird, unique colour, unique experience.

NB: Ice Box voters. She was apparently chucked out a tad prematurely. One more uncool and into the muck she goes! I give her about five minutes.

"When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability. To be alive is to be vulnerable."

Madeleine L'Engle

This is the Head of the English Department where I teach. She's actually a forceful, dynamic leader - but when I took her photograph today in the office, I suddenly saw her as a vulnerable little girl. You never quite know what your camera will reveal.

Biodiversity and Climate Change. Vulnerable ecosystems: one example.

On behalf of Greater Manchester Police, I want to apologise to all those vulnerable children who were let down in 2004 by police not thoroughly investigating the offences that had been committed against them.

I want to say that I am personally disgusted that these children were not cared for and by the awful abuse that they suffered. I am committed to doing all we can to ensure that they receive the justice today that they were denied 15 years ago.

Since the Mayor of Greater Manchester launched his review looking into the abuse of vulnerable children in care and the involvement of Greater Manchester Police, I have been personally involved and committed to sharing all of the information that the review team required.

In August 2018, it became clear that the Operation Augusta investigation was not to the standard that I would expect. I immediately commissioned a review to ensure that any risks posed by potential perpetrators would be addressed.

I also wanted to ensure that any victims were provided with the appropriate support from specialist agencies.

Following our internal review, a multi-agency team was established under Operation Green Jacket.

This included an SIO led Major Incident Team who were prepared to follow any potential lines of enquiry which could be pursued and seek to bring any potential perpetrators to justice.

To date Operation Green Jacket has identified 53 potential victims. 48 of these children were in looked after care in 2004/05.

Of the 53 identified, we have so far identified viable lines of enquiry in relation to 38 victims.

This includes the horrific abuse of Victoria Agoglia. In September 2019, one man was arrested and another interviewed under caution. Both men have been released under investigation and our enquiries remain ongoing.

We will continue to do all that we can to safeguard children within our communities. Greater Manchester Police will investigate any report of child exploitation that is made.

day 84 - Vunerability

Today this subject cropped up.

Health insurance was the first incident. A discussion arose as to the need for health insurance. It quickly turned into a discussion about age and invalidity. To digress briefly, I love words. In particular I love words that have colour and provoke imagery. During our discussion on vunerability and the need for medical care as age creeps upon us, one of my friends used the word "insidious".

What a great word!

Back to Vunerability.

The outcome of our insurance discussion boiled down to one thing. We become vunerable as we get old and there is nothing you can do about it.

The next time it occurred was talking about loneliness this evening. It is commonly thought that new years eve is the biggest party night of the year. Everybody talks about it like it is the holy grail.

"We're going to town for new years",

"New years eve' is gonna be the biggest party ever this year",

"Ye haf ter trow yer lips on a burd on new years, it's what they want ye tuh do"

and other colourful musings.

I disagree. Now don't think I am some sort of killjoy or someone who hates fun but I detest the thought of cramming myself into a bar on new years. Thousands of people who dont go out all year decide to have a months worth of alcohol in about ten minutes, then puke on your shoes! You wait for what seems like days for a taxi home, but they dont pick you up becuase your a bloke

"You might cause trouble!",

but they pick up the group of girls standing next to you, propping each other up and wiping vomit from their hair. (Sorry about the rant, really, I am)

For me new years is a reminder of the loneliness I have felt for an entire year. I dont want to spend it getting drunk, thats too dangerous for that state of mind. I want to spend it with friends, conversing and sharing lifes tribulations over the past year and our dreams of the future. I want to spend it in the arms of a lover, bathing in the feeling that there is a future where beautiful things happen and the world is a happy place.

However this is not going to happen. The reality is I will be spending the evening reflecting on a year that was difficult. Lonely. But there is something else. The year gone may have encapsulated a troubled past but also the seeds of a bright and wonderful future.

If I can hold on to that thought it will be a good new years eve :)

I haven't done a decent street walk for a while but this morning I wandered around Quarry Bay for 3 hours. I saw this girl going into the Monster Building and followed her in to see if I could get a photo of her - she looked spectacular. She was trying to take some selfies including the building (a famous IG site) and I offered to help her in return for a portrait. She said she never had her photo taken because she was paralysed on the right side of her face. I said I would never have realised and she could simply turn slightly side on so we would capture her preferred side. She said this was fine and I took 3 shots and thanked her. Sometimes we miss people's vulnerabilities but in this case I think she photographed beautifully.

Rapid increases in public debt have emerged recently in low-income countries while development needs remain large. The drivers of rising debt vary greatly across countries: for some, it has been driven by scaling-up of public investment; for others, adverse commodity price shocks are to blame, while a third group of countries have followed still imprudent fiscal policies. Flat—if not falling—official development assistance and an increasingly diverse group of multilateral, bilateral, and private lenders have accompanied the debt escalation. This seminar panel will discuss (1) various debt drivers across countries; (2) financing needs for development; and (3) how national authorities, multilateral and bilateral partners, and private creditors can strike the right balance between development spending and containing debt vulnerability. The artist displays her personal vulnerability by offering completely nude self-portrait with no retouch. Of particular importance for the author is the question of vulnerability of female body nowadays. Despite considerable achievements of the XXI century, we should be honest to admit that woman still does not owe her body: depending on her origin, it belongs to father, husband, family, Sharia Law, advertisement, corporations, brands, complexes, struggle for perfection and external viewpoints, but, unfortunately, not to woman. The author strives to stimulate the audience to reflect on this issue, while letting the viewers to independently decide on the necessity of reconsidering the existing stereotypes and search for personal point of vulnerability.

The project is relevant for our time and society, the problem, which is studied here, has deep penetration into everyday life. The object contacts with a large number of random viewers outside the exhibition space in an unprotected, aggressive, indifferent environment. Video documentation of this action is an unbiased, naked fixation of the interaction between art object with real environment without any expectation of a certain result. The project raises questions without giving answers to them.

CHINESE SOFTSHELL TURTLE

A predominantly carnivorous and vulnerable species due to habitat loss and collection for food (turtle soup), living in fresh and brackish waters. Since they have a long snout and tubelike nostrils, they are able to "snorkel" in shallow waters.

Interestingly, Chinese softshell turtles can secrete urea from their mouths. This adaptation helps them survive in brackish waters since they can excrete urea without drinking too much salty water.

"Pelodiscus is one of the most widely distributed genera of softshell turtles, ranging from south-eastern Siberia and Korea over central and southern China to Vietnam. Economically, Pelodiscus are the most important chelonians of the world and have been bred and traded in high numbers for centuries, resulting in many populations established outside their native range. Currently, more than 300 million turtles per year are sold in China alone, and the bulk of this figure comprises farmed Pelodiscus. Due to easy availability, Pelodiscus also constitutes a model organism for physiological and embryological investigations. Yet, diversity and taxonomy of Pelodiscus are poorly understood and a comprehensive investigation using molecular tools has never been published.”

Our exteriors

They can hide some of the deepest and darkest feelings ever felt.

The can show extreme wear and tear, done by others and ourselves.

Tough is our skin, delicate our souls.

I, myself, am proof.

I’ve been shoved into early responsibility, which has cause stress and lowered self-esteem.

I have let myself go;

Lack of food, sleep, and interaction.

We, as people, can let the smallest things bother us

and truly let it affect our moods, behaviors and appearance.

Our souls are fragile like a butterfly;

Beautiful to look at, but in tough conditions

breakable.

This was my artist statement for my final. You might have a better understanding of what was conveyed in these pictures, rather than just a pretty image.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 metres (10 ft) in rare cases and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb).

Their unusually large size has been attributed to island gigantism, since no other carnivorous animals fill the niche on the islands where they live. However, recent research suggests the large size of Komodo dragons may be better understood as representative of a relict population of very large varanid lizards that once lived across Indonesia and Australia, most of which, along with other megafauna, died out after the Pleistocene. Fossils very similar to V. komodoensis have been found in Australia dating to greater than 3.8 million years ago, and its body size remained stable on Flores, one of the handful of Indonesian islands where it is currently found, over the last 900,000 years, "a time marked by major faunal turnovers, extinction of the island's megafauna, and the arrival of early hominids by 880 ka [kiloannums]."

As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the ecosystems in which they live.[8] Komodo dragons hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals. It has been claimed that they have a venomous bite; there are two glands in the lower jaw which secrete several different toxic proteins. The biological significance of these proteins is disputed, but the glands have been shown to secrete an anticoagulant. Their group behaviour in hunting is exceptional in the reptile world. The diet of big Komodo dragons mainly consists of deer, though they also eat considerable amounts of carrion. Komodo dragons also occasionally attack humans in the area of West Manggarai Regency where they live in Indonesia.

Mating begins between May and August, and the eggs are laid in September. About 20 eggs are deposited in abandoned megapode nests or in a self-dug nesting hole.[4] The eggs are incubated for seven to eight months, hatching in April, when insects are most plentiful. Young Komodo dragons are vulnerable and therefore dwell in trees, safe from predators and cannibalistic adults. They take about eight to 9 years to mature, and are estimated to live up to 30 years.

Komodo dragons were first recorded by Western scientists in 1910.[10] Their large size and fearsome reputation make them popular zoo exhibits. In the wild, their range has contracted due to human activities, and they are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.[1] They are protected under Indonesian law, and a national park, Komodo National Park, was founded to aid protection efforts.

Police have launched a two-day operation to protect the most vulnerable members of the community.

The initiative codenamed Operation Longford will see officers from across the Force and specialist units including traffic, tactical aid and the ANPR intercept teams take to the streets in a bid to target vulnerability in the community.

Some of the work as part of the days of action (Friday 29 to Saturday 30 May) will include visits to licensed premises, policing open spaces that attract youths and alcohol, takeaway enforcement, visit to shisha bars in addition to Metrolink and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) patrols.

Superintendent Craig Thompson operational lead said: “Safeguarding vulnerable people is an on-going priority for the Force which makes days of action like this so important. By having mechanisms in place and working alongside our partners we can ensure those at greater risk in our community are protected before the actions such as exploitation and abuse begin.

“As with our day to day policing we will also carry out enforcement work and will target offenders for a range of offences including, human trafficking, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE*), antisocial behaviour and general criminality.”

As part of the operation officers from the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team and partners such as Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner will launch the partnership Safe Haven scheme. It is a place of safety for anyone who is out and about in the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night and in need of help, support, a place of safety or a designated meeting point for when you lose your friends.

Superintendent Thompson added: “We want Operation Longford to show our community that their safety comes first and will always be our priority. We will make use of all of our disruption tactics to put a stop to criminals.”
