This is a series of models depicting a Husky MRAP with mounted mine detecting equipment. One model was produced in 1:10 scale. Three other models, more portable and easier to transport, were produced in 1:18 scale.

The model was developed in 3D software first and produced by rapid prototyping. In fact these models were 100% rapid prototyped, by SLA and SLS. The chassis, in particular, were designed with channels to accept metal reinforcement profiles, otherwise it would be too vulnerable.

As the 1:18 scale models are meant to be traveling models, they are accompanied by the custom transit cases.

The models were recognized for accuracy and high level of detailing. The large model was placed on permanent display at the client's office and the 1:18 scale models started their trade show tour.

Lubuto Library Project celebrated 2010 National Library Week by holding a special event at the recently opened DC Public Library's Benning Neighborhood Library. The highlight was a reading by world renowned actor and humanitarian Danny Glover and Lubuto founding Advisory Board member Mulenga Kapwepwe, Chairperson of the National Arts Council of Zambia, of Martin’s Big Words, an award-winning children’s book about Martin Luther King, Jr. Mr. Glover and Ms, Kapwepwe were introduced by James Early, Director of Cultural Heritage Policy at the Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies at the Smithsonian Institution, and about 50 DC public school children attended.

Also featured was "Our Time to Bring Change," a film by Silvina Fernandez-Duque, depicting Lubuto Library children in Zambia interpreting Martin’s Big Words in theater, dance, song and art. The joint narration of Martin’s Big Words is a bridge that connects the children Lubuto serves in Africa with children in the U.S., using the story and words of Martin Luther King, Jr. to inspire and change lives.

Founded in 2005, Lubuto Library Project opened its first library at the Fountain of Hope Drop-In Centre in Lusaka, Zambia in 2007. Its second library at Ngwerere School in Lusaka, construction funded by Dow Jones & Company, is will officially open in September 2010.

The Lubuto Library Project, Inc. (www.Lubuto.org) is an innovative development organization. In cooperation with governments, it creates opportunities for equitable education and poverty reduction through libraries and related educational, cultural and community programs. Its mission is to enrich the lives of street children, orphans and other vulnerable and out-of-school children and youth in sub-Saharan Africa. The organization constructs beautiful, indigenously-styled open-access libraries stocked with a comprehensive collection of well-chosen books. These libraries serve as safe havens and are the center for Lubuto’s programs, which offer discovery and joy through reading, music, art, drama, computers and other activities. Lubuto also connects North American and European volunteers and students with their African peers through community service.

Why can’t I see it?

“To love someone fiercely, to believe in something with your whole heart, to celebrate a fleeting moment in time, to fully engage in a life that doesn’t come with guarantees – these are risks that involve vulnerability and often pain. But, I’m learning that recognizing and leaning into the ...

Yay new &bean giftie! Ok so it's nearly 2 weeks old but it's my first time logging in for quite a while so it's new for me haha.

Really love &bean skins...to me it always seems that the faces always have this fragile quality to them, which I love.

I think this is my first pic using blonde hair!

This was taken at the same time as another shot I posted, but this one's with the better camera. Yes, the better camera is the older one with nothing automatic about it that shoots film.

I've been playing with crossprocessing as a point of divergence, bringing out certain colors, restraining other colors, and stuff, since there's basicly no way that you can get realistic colors out of crossprocessing. I went with the vaugely cyan tonality, and then played with pushing just enough flesh tones back towards normal so that she didn't look Borg.

Y pensar que por esos cablecillos van nuestras operaciones bancarias, nuestros mensajes personales, nuestras intimidades informáticas.... ¡Qué valor!

In 1997, the vulnerability of the non-stealthy MC-130 force in the modern high-threat environment was becoming problematic. The USAF conducted studies on a possible replacement for the MC-130 fleet, known as the “MC-X” or “M-X” programs, with operating capability by 2018. The priority was a stealthy replacement with enhanced capabilities to support Special Operating Forces (SOF) insertion and extraction into denied areas from strategic distances. While the investigation proceeded, the USAF sought to modernize its current force, intending to procure 37 MC-130J aircraft to replace its MC-130Es and MC-130Ps, which were 40 years old. The new MC-130J was based on the KC-130J tanker operated by the US Marine Corps but with added features for combat search and rescue and special operations missions. The MC-130J adds an Enhanced Service Life Wing, and Enhanced Cargo Handling System, a Universal Aerial Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI) boom refuelling receptacle, more powerful electrical generators, an electro-optical/infrared sensor, a combat systems officer (CSO) station on the flight deck, provisions for the Large Aircraft Countermeasures System, and additional armour.

In this image, an MC-130J (serial number: 10-5714) of the 67th Special Operations Squadron (67th SOS), flies through inclement weather. The aircraft is shown with tailband markings commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The 67th SOS, the “Night Owls,” has been stationed at RAF Mildenhall since May 1993. By June 2013, the Night Owls received their first MC-130J Commando II. On 31 October 2020, 67th SOS Commando IIs participated in the successful rescue of Philip Warton, who was being held hostage in Nigeria. In August 2024, the 67th SOS refuelled Finnish Air Force F/A-18C Hornets during a training exercise. In March 2024, the 67th SOS transitioned from the MC130J to the Fairchild Dornier C-146A Wolfhound.

Breakout Session: Film Screening and Panel: Supporting Vulnerable Children

Join us for a special sneak peek of the new documentary film “Mully,” to be released in 2017, followed by a panel discussion about models for supporting vulnerable children in communities around the world. The dramatic film “Mully” chronicles the remarkable life of Charles Mulli, who was abandoned by his parents at 6 years old but rose to build a powerful business empire and a thriving family of his own. Impacted by the realization that over 100,000 orphans live in the slums of Nairobi, he redirected his life’s work and created Mully Children’s Family, a foundation that has helped over 12,000 orphans and other underserved Kenyan youth by providing them with shelter, clothing, education, and medical care.

After the film screening, participants will:

• Meet Charles Mulli to hear about his life and work on the ground.

• Discuss strategies for assisting highly vulnerable families and children at risk.

• Explore opportunities and approaches to developing effective partnerships.

MODERATOR:

Kevin J. Delaney, Editor-in-Chief, Quartz

PARTICIPANTS:

Lynn Croneberger, Chief Executive Officer, SOS Children's Villages - USA

Charles Mulli, Founder and CEO, Mully Children’s Family

George Srour, Founder and Chief Dreamer, Building Tomorrow, Inc.

Fact: This photo was originally supposed to show a girl about to cut her wild hair...but I ended up doing this, and it stuck.

I was challenged to dig up a painful old picture of my youth... and so here I was...

For the life of me I am trying to imagine what I would have been so happy about... because my memories of this time put me into such arenas as lighting my brothers bed on fire while playng with matches, using a good magnifing glass to cook an entire colony of ants, or rubbing my hands along the freshly painted wall done by my Dad just to give it that little extra feeling of western texture... :) Maybe I am contemplating my next great adventure involving some stray cat and a bottle of bleach... who knows, but for what it's worth, this is what my parents put together for my early years... :)

Now I'l like to see the rest of you take up this challenge as well... that's of course after you leave some candid remark on this post... :)

And I expect at least someone to notice the full head of hair... :)
