This is how I spent my New Year's Eve. I was almost through with my other journal, so I decided to start a new one for the new year. I decided to stay in the Time Life series of the "Life World Library". This book is on India. For some reason I never did anything to the covers of my other visual journals. I thought arting up the cover of this one would be a good start to a fresh start. I really like how it turned out.

The Quebrada del Toro (Quebrada del Toro), is a geological accident (broken) located between the town of Campo Quijano (1521 m) and Puerta Tastil, in the Department of Rosario de Lerma, province of Salta. Through it runs a section of the so-called Tren de las Nubes, branch C-14 of the General Belgrano Railway.
It forms part of the system of canyons of the Andes of the Argentinean northwest that descends of the Eastern face of the Puna de Atacama from heights that surpass the 5 000 ms on the level of the sea until reaching the inferior valleys, in the case of the one of the Toro, The southwest of the Lerma valley.
With about 90 km of length from the Altos de Muñano to the west, with its highest height in Abra Blanca (4180 masl), and Campo Quijano to the east, the Toro Canyon has a general northwest-southeast orientation with a general slope around the 3%, and is flanked by mountain ranges that rise above the 4000 msnm, arriving with the Nevado de Chañi at 5896 m.
On the lower section of the ravine, between Campo Quijano and Ingeniero Maury (2358 m), the Toro River runs tightly encased between rocks of the Puncoviscana Formation, along some 26 kilometers.
From Maury Engineer, a geological fault puts in contact the hard and gray slabs of the Puncoviscana Formation with softer tertiary rocks and of reddish color, that undergo greater erosion reason why the ravine becomes wider until arriving at Door of Tastil .
Although the origin of the toponym is not known with certainty, it is supposed that it is an indigenous word that refers to the mud, since with the rains summer its waters run torrential and muddy.
To 25 km of Campo Quijano is Chorrillos (2111 msnm), where there is a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, and 10 km later Engineer Maury, that takes its name to Richard Maury, who designed and constructed the C-14. Maury owns a railway station and in the vicinity is the archaeological site Incahuasi, remains of an Inca fortress built by the Inca Túpac Yupanqui or by its son Huayna Capac declared National Historical Monument the 10 of December of 1945 by decree № 30833. Governor Manuel Solá (2555 masl), where the landscape becomes more arid shows, in addition to the greater erosion mentioned, evidence of the exploitation of various minerals (iron, lead, silver, etc.).
On the mountains located to the east of the ravine is an important section of Inca road. In the area have identified more than 25 archaeological sites as well as small structures of circular shape located at the tops of hills at an average distance of 150 meters, which allowed direct visual contact to be assumed to have fulfilled the function of posts Observation or communication.
In addition to the railway the canyon is crossed by the river and partly by the cornice, by the national route 51. The viaduct of the Toro crosses the barrel from band to band.

MONUMENTAL GHOSTLY HEIGHTS
BRADFORD KESSLER SOLO EXHIBITION
DAFENG GALLERY / 798 / BEIJING
7.31.10 - 9.19.10
Bradford Kessler, born in Kansas USA, 1982, currently lives and works in Beijing. Born and raised on the white bread of America, filled with dreams of Disneyland and rapid-flash images of cartoons and television, he finds himself immersed in China's nascent art community. Kessler's approach to creating art work is based on transmitting conceptual ideas. He creates art objects, projects and videos referencing conspiracy, movies, drugs, suicide and philosophy, which attempt to explain a kind of mythology of his generation. Art is meant to be shared, it is an experience. An art work itself is a language, it is a means of communication. Through the concepts of his works, Kessler introduces a new language, diction, syntax to Beijing's art community, which is exactly what constitutes the raw creative environment that defines the evolving character of Beijing.
Kessler describes his inspiration for "Monumental Ghostly Heights" as a process of gathering information and visual ideas all related to incidents of dreaming and escape, both real and metaphysical. The artworks, better described as objects or products, displayed are mere byproducts or selected physical realizations of a thousand fleeting thoughts, images, questions and inspirational moments. Consisting of blueprints splattered with bat blood, his "K(O) Phasor Safari Series" of pretend B-Flick movie posters recreate tranquilized visions of technological horror and mass parapsychological events. "Projectiles for Riding a Single Etermal Wave" is a set of abstract fiberglass sculptures coated in surfwax which are modeled from the molecular structure of cyanide and project from his futuristic replica of the portable M29 'Davy Crockett' nuclear weapon system tested by the American military during the Korean War. Kessler imagines these over sized cyanide molecules as props like the giant tarantulas wreaking havoc over chaotic crowds of a 1950's Sci-Fi Horror movie. His research refers to the prophetic visions and suicide missions of the UFO cult Heaven's Gate and the Utopian People's Temple. An underlying thread of his works is the desire to escape humanness and discover what Walt Disney would call a "magic kingdom." This search of a dream and the suspension of disbelief that supports it are evidence of a generation attempting to define and maintain their eternal youth. Kessler represents a generation of young artists rapidly surfing the internet, unafraid of pioneering new conceptual territories, and willing to dramatically expose themselves in the name of expression and creativity.

Two completely different generations of Blackpool tram here... representing the 'streamliner' generation is Balloon tramcar 706 'Princess Alice' - built in 1934/35, this was one of 27 English Electric Balloons built, and was originally closed top until 1980 after an accident with 705 - and can carry 84 seated passengers plus 10 standees.
Alongside 706 is the modern day equivalent from 2012, a Bombardier Flexity Swift 2, number 013... ordered in 2009 by Blackpool Council, this is one of 16 built, of an order costing £33million, and is currently the only tram of this type in the world. These are wider than the older trams (2.65m), but have only 74 seats plus 148 standing spaces. They can go at up to 43.5mph and are 32.25m long.
It is quite possible that this investment in new trams saved the Blackpool Tramway, the oldest electric tram system in the world. The old fleet of Balloons and Railcoaches (which is what they all were, even if outside they had been modernised) were costing a lot to maintain and were quite slow in comparison to the number 1 bus service which runs parallel to the tramway through its length. The 16 Flexities run a year-round service at a frequency of 4 trams per hour along the full length of the route, and have faster top speed and acceleration than the old trams, so giving the tramway the edge over the bus service. These trams are also 100% wheelchair accessible, and are fitted with audio visual passenger information systems (although they are quite repetitive... "Mind the doors please... hold tight please"). These trams are easy and cheaper to maintain than the older trams, so a more reliable service can be run. Without this, it is likely the tramway would have wound up and closed down due to lack of funds to run it....
During bank holiday weekends, such as here on Easter Weekend 2013, some members of the restored Heritage Fleet come out to provide special limited stop journeys in addition to the service offered by the Flexities - some of these special services have made unscheduled extensions to Fleetwood at the request of the passengers. Different ticket types are available, but I went for a very reasonable "all mode" type ticket which allowed me unlimited day travel by heritage tram, flexity tram, and bus, throughout the whole Blackpool Transport network, all for just £10. The limited stop services the heritage fleet run mean they keep up with the Flexities (in fact whilst I was there, they either gained ground on them if in front or caught up with them if behind and had to wait until the Flexities moved from the stop).
