Fun with Visual Puns
Did a shoot with a salt shaker almost two months ago and had this swimming around in my head ever since.
Salt shaker and toy eyeball on top of a piece of blue foam core. Heavy kosher salt used to provide more texture.
Almost bare monolight with a small reflector to camera right. This seemed to be the key to the composition. Too little or to much shadow, to long or two short. I had been shooting most of the shots from higher above. Moving down solved a lot of issues and gave a more interesting shot.
2' x 4' softbox about 4 feet above the table and to the left (but almost over head) to provide a little bit of fill and to bounce the color up into the shadows. Small foam core reflector lust to camera left to fill in the eyeball and a large piece of foam core nestled directly below the lens.
The visual notetaking crew represented with a packed house for this panel. They've always drawn other panels, so it was about time someone drew them.
Pages done for Decorated Page Workshop, Lesson 4 Cutouts and Addons plus Patterns and Motifs, also Lesson 3 stamped background.
My big Roman numeral ten is both a cutout and an add on. It doesn't show, but I also used my new Versamark inkpad to stamp it. I like the look. It's very understated.
The X's/Roman numeral 10 serve as both motif and pattern. The hand carved stamp that I stamped with my new Versamark inkpad is also patterning. I love the Versamark! I'm going to get a lot of use out of that one.
The piece that reads Mon Jesus is from my great-grandfather Aristide Huybrecht's funeral phamplet. He was a French speaking Belgian who emigrated to Canada.
I didn't think about it when I was picking the pictures to use for the collage, but I like that David is looking toward his descendent Jesus on the cross.
The exhibition is organized annually by the University Library. KAUST community members are invited to submit their visual artwork for consideration in the form of paintings, photography, or sculptures.

Stand up to racism
A racist offensive against refugees, migrants and Muslims is being pushed by some politicians and press. It is crucial we
respond to this by standing in solidarity against attempts to divide our communities. The appalling treatment of refugees across Europe and the staggering rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes must be challenged.
Let’s send a message that drives back the tide of racism, fascism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and the scapegoating of migrants and refugees – we say refugees welcome here and yes to diversity!
Join the Europe-wide UN Anti-Racism Day Demonstration when tens of thousands march across Britain, with major mobilisations in London, Scotland and Wales joining thousands in cities across Europe and around the world to say no to racism.
Stand Up To Racism has led some of the biggest anti-racist
mobilisations in Britain of the last decade, including the UN Anti-racism day demonstrations of 2014 and 2015 and the 100,000 strong Refugees Welcome demonstration on 12th September 2015."
