Taken for the Active Assignment Weekly! group. This week's assignment: Visual Puns
We got a new couch (that I wanted to show of) and I found a new whisky that has become an instant fav of mine. The Macallan 12 yrs feels just like this picture upon drinking: warmth extending from the center delivering an undisputed coziness. Well, udisputed is probably wrong, because the new couch is just as cozy as well. So both go very well together, while watching the current season of Mad Men...
What it took: Have to admit that I realized the concept of the shot only after taking it. But the full colored picture looked sooo warm (also due to wrong white balance) that I realized that I could make use of it to bring the message along).
So it is just a feathered selection were I kept the color while the rest of the picture was desaturated.
Active Assignment Weekly January 30 - February 6: Figure of Speech
WIT: Went to the grocery store to buy some peas, got canned peas, came home, saw that they were a rather unattractive grey-green shade. So, back to the store, where I bought some frozen peas (can you tell I've never bought peas before, don't like the taste of them), which were a much better shade of green.
Took several shots, to get the correct angle and a pleasing shape to the hands - it proved more difficult than I had first thought - there are an infinite number of ways to cup one's hands in a "giving" position. In post, cropped to square, and very little in tweaking, wanted to keep its pretty natural.
Sole!
Look for abstract shapes and designs today. Make a photo of a subject everyone has seen that's not easily recognizable.
I've always loved illusions like this... Orem Water Department display. Orem City Park, Utah County, Utah.
AAW January 21 - 28: Visual Puns
WIT: Bought some grapes, and made my partner in crime do his best wrathful expression, and took the shot. Not much in processing, except a little adjustment in light and crop to 8 by 10.
As suggested by Au Kirk I will also add "Sour Grapes" as another possibility.
I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut lately. Nothing turns out quite the way I want and a lot of things end up feeling like retreads... I want new surroundings, and a new camera (I'm growing pretty weary of the limitations of my own).
I've used that dress too many times.
Other than that, things have been going pretty well, I suppose. Yesterday an old man with an Eastern-European accent at the grocery store (I guess he was one of my customers awhile ago) told me I was beautiful and gave me a hug. Non-creepily. Random compliments are nice.
yikes! i'm in over my head!
for flickr group roulette : picture puns
(yay! my first fgr)
also, for GTWL : diptychs
(yay! my first GTWL)
so i thought this image and pun was pretty fitting, since i've been feeling quite overwhelmed since starting my 365.
during college, my relationship with my camera and with art changed completely. it kinda fell apart. i kinda fell apart. after a year of being on the outs, i decided i needed to learn to embrace photography again. after a year of avoiding any sort of meaningful art, i jumped in to this whole crazy 365 thing and it's been a really rough start.
i've been so uninspired for so long and it doesn't just come back instantly. after my first week, i thought "this is crazy! i can't possibly do this" it's tough to go from not shooting at all to shooting every day. but that's why i did it.
and after discovering amazing groups on flickr like FGR and GTWL and 365 days, i've actually been feeling inspired again. i've been having so much fun with their challenges and themes. it's great to have some sort of direction...i'm definitely the type of person who needs a place to start and then run with it. all the people in these groups are so nice and so wonderfully talented. it almost reminds me of photo classes in college, except way funner.
i feel like i'm really starting to feel creative again...and stop taking everything so seriously.
thanks everyone :)

Another shopping day - need to take a tablet back to Curry's tomorrow though because they gave me the wrong version...easy mistake on their part to be fair. Passed Toys'R'Us who appear to be selling children off according to the positioning of the two posters...
Was finally able to reveal that I'd won one of the hourly prizes (I get a posh bag and a book with all the winning entries in) in the Urban Photographer of the Year Competition. I'll post the winning pic in the comments.
A fun picture to start off the new year. My son and I were playing around and he came up with the idea of shooting "duck tape"
Details: tripod, 17-40mmL, natural light, red and white backgrounds, minimal post-processing.
When she stays with us, our large grand-dog usually sleeps in our bed, "nestled" mostly in the middle (ha ha), but.....
At her age is still surprises us that she can jump up and down off, the bed.
Problem: if you have a white plate on a white background it's hard to blow out the background to pure white without doing the same to the plate.
Solution: use a different coloured plate. And/or separate it from the background so you can control the lighting on the two planes independently.
This was lit with one bare SB600 directed at the ceiling and one gridded SB800, bith fired by Nikon CLS.
it's Monday.. so I went with an easy one...
(and I'm french.. so my english puns are pretty limited!)
Y is for Yummy !
Found on Magazine Street in New Orleans, August 8, 2004 (pre-hurricane Katrina).
I wonder where it is now?
Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my personal favorite.

Fun with Visual Puns
Did a shoot with a salt shaker almost two months ago and had this swimming around in my head ever since.
Salt shaker and toy eyeball on top of a piece of blue foam core. Heavy kosher salt used to provide more texture.
Almost bare monolight with a small reflector to camera right. This seemed to be the key to the composition. Too little or to much shadow, to long or two short. I had been shooting most of the shots from higher above. Moving down solved a lot of issues and gave a more interesting shot.
2' x 4' softbox about 4 feet above the table and to the left (but almost over head) to provide a little bit of fill and to bounce the color up into the shadows. Small foam core reflector lust to camera left to fill in the eyeball and a large piece of foam core nestled directly below the lens.
Miniature painting - 5.4 x 8.6 cm.
Part 10 of "The Fable of the Hay Bales" : watercolor and gouache on 21 discarded paper subway tickets sized with gesso and marble dust.
A magnificent set of 21 lusciously-colored rustic winter landscapes featuring hay bales. This collection of miniatures, when properly lined up, and allowing for spacing, occupies over six horizontal feet by about four inches in height.
"The Fable of the Hay Bales" is a pictorial narrative comprising 21 individually-titled miniature paintings, as follows:
Hay Bale Behind a Scrim
Hay Bale's Soliloquy
Hay Bale Ventures Forth
Meet by the Pond
Two Hay Bales
Hay Bale Smells a Rose
Hay Bales in the Bloom
Three Hay Bales
Four Hay Bales
Hay Bales on Parade
Peace Hay Zippy Love Bales
Sentinels
Hay Bales of Fortune
Hay Bale Hiding
Seekers
Hay Bale Discovered
Hay Bales on the Run
Hay Bales Storm the Barn
The Heavy Holy Hay Bale
The Departure of the Hay Bales
The Lotus Eaters
Each landscape is meticulously hand painted to the minutest detail in spectacularly bright colors, encapsulating vast, woodsy vistas in miniature. Collectively, this suite of pictures tells the action-packed, suspenseful story of hay bales in love fighting for freedom in an authoritarian hay-bale society.
A unique and enchanting collection incorporating elements of mythology, animism, psychedelica, behavioral psychology, fantasy and legend.

What to do on a rainy Sunday? snail arranging, naturally... The variety of patterns and colouration have made the banded snail a model species in the study of natural selection.
I love the joke and execution on this one. Check out the details.

This is my entry for this month's Get Pushed! challenge from my partner this month - Doug (Laveen Photography (aka cyclis451)). Not only is he a namesake, but also it appears we have spent time in similar locations within a few years of each other, and has some great photos to prove it too! (See www.flickr.com/photos/cyclist451/)
I have to apologize for having so much content on my photostream, as it makes it difficult to figure out what to push my way. It is one reason I have tried to sort things into sets. However, Doug was first out of the gate this month with a challenge to use my photographer's eye to find something recognizable and photograph it in a unique way, as befitting the visualization of a photographer.
I always enjoy this type of challenge because it is so open-ended. I figured that the way this came across, it was all about visualizing a concept and executing the image. On a whim, I came up with the following as an image that jumped into my head upon the mention of a phrase: When my wife and I were dancing (Ballroom), an expression would come up when we had mastered a dance sequence for our level. For Sutton (our instructor), here is the visual pun for you to ponder next time you consider saying it to one of your students...

This pun comes with a red herring.
It was taken with a speedlight in a homemade softbox front and below.
SECRET ASIAN MAN
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXGAif4dKhs
There's a man who leads a life of danger
And at buffets where he eats he stays a stranger
With every bite he takes another chance he takes
Odds are he won't live to see tomorrow
Secret Asian man, secret Asian man
They've given you some sushi and taken away your name
Beware of tasty chunks that you find
A chunk can hide Samonella and make you blind
Ah, be careful what you eat
Or you'll be puking in the street
Odds are you won't make it to the bathroom.
Secret Asian man, secret Asian man
They've given you some stir fry, and you take away a bag.
Secret Asian man, secret Asian man
You ordered it by number and they took away your plate
Lunchin’ on the Riviera one day
And then barfin' in a Mumbai alley next day
Oh no, sanitation sometimes slips
But it went right past your lips
The odds are you won't make it to the bathroom.
Secret Asian man, secret Asian man
They've given you a number and you get zipped up in a bag
I know that all of you have been waiting for one of these. Sorry it's been a while.

On an outing with my best friend, we stopped along the scenic route (Highway 98A, east of Destin near Sandestin) and borrowed a couple of lounge chairs for this shot. Some other tourists snapped this for me. Then they all lined up for pictures with my hunky friend. He's a bachelor, ladies.
