November 1st is DÃa de Todos Los Santos (All Saints Day). We don't have quite the same celebrations and customs for this and Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead / All Souls' Day), which is on November 2nd, as they do in Mexico, but it's traditional in the Canary Islands on these days, for people to visit cemeteries, clean up graves and bring new flowers. There's usually at least one item in the local press or media every year saying how much flower sellers have raised the prices for the occasion.
La Laguna Ahora say that the occasion is much more than that though and suggest that it is also a perfect time to get together with the family and enjoy some typical sweetmeats. (Hey, any day is perfect for that in my book.) One of their recommendations is aptly named Huesos de santo (Saint's Bones) - a marzipan confection with gooey stuff in the middle, normally associated with Christmas - and those of you who speak Spanish can enjoy the recipes for these Postres para Todos los Santos.

The trip from Singapore to Taipei went smoothly, and we took a shuttle from the TaoYuen airport to the high-speed rail terminal. The train got us to Tainan in about 2 hours where we took another shuttle to a bus stop where Angie and LiShung had agreed to meet. Unfortunately we got off one stop too early. I was stuck on a dark street corner with 4 bags, not a penny of money, and not a word of Taiwanese while Angie rode the next bus to find Li Hsiang. I was sure glad to see them come driving up about a half hour later. All's well that ends well!

Fort Scaur is located in Somerset in the West End of Bermuda. Construction of the fort began in 1868. It was to have a strategic location to support the Royal Navy Dockyards and sits on the highest point of land in the West End. The fort was garrisoned with British troops until the end of WW1 and American forces were stationed there during WW11. It is now a park and a good place for birding.
