"We kunnen vanavond laat, na sluitingstijd, wel even naar Mariken van Nieumeghen (van Nimwegen) gaan", zegt Iris tegen haar vriendin Anne in de etalage aan de Lange Hezelstraat. Mariken is het meisje uit de 16e eeuw dat sinds 1957 op de Grote Markt staat. "Dan kunnen we onze nieuwe kleren laten zien. Wat zal ze verbaasd zijn als ze dat ziet." "Ja dat doen we", zegt Anne "Maar ik wed dat ze toch haar eigen middeleeuwse burger kledij prefereert." En zo was het.
"We can go late tonight, after closing time, to Mariken van Nieumeghen (van Nimwegen)", Iris said to her girlfriend Anne. Mariken is the 16th century girl who has been on the Grote Markt since 1957. "We can show our new clothes. She shall be surprised when she sees it." "Yes, let's do so", Anne says. "But I bet she does prefer her own medieval citizen dress." And so it was.
"Nous pouvons aller tard ce soir, après l'heure de fermeture, à Mariken van Nieumeghen (van Nimwegen)", dit Iris contre sa petite amie Anne.
Mariken est la fille du 16ème siècle qui a été sur le Grote Markt depuis 1957. "Nous pouvons montrer nos nouveaux vêtements. Elle sera surpris quand elle le verra". "Oui, faisons-le", dit Anne. "Mais je parie qu'elle préfère sa propre tenue citoyenne médiévale". Et c'était ainsi.

I went to a Say Anything concert on Monday when I took this so I never had time.
Had a blast, was right in front against the barrier.
Just so you know, I tend to take pictures of my shoes a lot.

1957. LIC and FWC’s old family home and holiday photo album.
Charles, Rudker, Mr. and Mrs. Vandoornick, (There were various surname spellings Van Doernick?) Bodwin, their sister, antefixus and LIC. Bodwin’s family lived down the street. We visited them one summer at their cottage. Godwin taught me to ride his bicycle for which I will ever be great full. The summer that we visited Bodwin’s family cabin I was impressed by his ability to catch, kill and properly mount quite a variety of insects. His father had greenhouses on his property on Lawson Road, Highland Creek, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
One summer Rucker played with his air compression BB rifle, firing it several times with no discharge before pointing it at Bodwin’s face, pulling the trigger and shooting a round between Bodwin’s eyebrows. The BB did not penetrate Bodwin’s skin or worse take out an eye but he must have lost the use of his rifle and have been somehow seriously punished. The incident was shocking to me and it was my first brush with the danger of firearms. Bodwin’s and I were fairly close in age. He was polite and generally a hard working polite lad. The family relocated, likely to eastern Ontario where I found phone numbers for both brothers but I was too shy to call and disturb them in their adult life.

Op 24 en 25 augustus staat het Kasteel van Rhoon in het teken van Frankrijk met meer dan 75 stands met mooie brocante, maar ook kleding, accessoires, kunstenaars zoals Arthur Remmig, schrijvers als Heleen van Royen, lekkernijen en dit alles in fijne Franse sfeer. De kasteelfair in Rhoon wordt weer een feestje!
Kom proeven, ruiken, voelen en lekker genieten van Franse chansons, macarons, overheerlijke flensjes.
Ook aan de kinderen is gedacht. Een echt familie evenement, dit mag je niet missen…

The Museum Van Loon is a private residence built in 1672 by the architect Adriaen Dortsman. The first resident was the painter Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt. The Van Loon family, scions of one of the founding members of the Dutch East India Company, bought the house in 1884, and a descendant still lives on the top floor. The remainder has been converted to a museum.
We were less than happy with our visit here, as most of the rooms were intentionally blanked out behind black cloth as an in-your-face bit of conceptual art — part of what would otherwise have been an excellent exhibit on colonialism, race, and the people exploited by the Dutch East India Company. But we were able to see some portions of the interior.
