Mackinac Island, Michigan, is a beautiful island. Located in the Straits of Mackinac, it's about 8-9 miles in circumference.
There's the actual town of Mackinac Island, where the ships dock. Since 1898 (I think), there have been no motorized vehicles allowed on the island (for consumer use, at least) as they scared the horses.
Your modes of transportation are one of three:
1. Horse (and carriage) as a taxi, personal rental, or part of a tour (for about $30/adult). Or, just rent a horse for $50/hour/horse.
2. Bicycles. For rental all over the place in town.
3. Your two feet.
The town of Mackinac Island. Its Main Street -- the first thing you see after passing under the portico from any of the ferries -- is actually Huron Street. One parallel street behind, you have Market Street. There are a number of other streets in the town, too, all easily walkable (obviously). Since this is basically a tourist resort, you'll find about 80% of the establishments in town fall into one of the following categories: fudge shops (12 different companies have fudge shops here), bed & breakfasts, bike rentals, or restaurants (pizzeria, bar/saloon/burger joint). The only eyesore on the island is a Starbucks. It disgusts me to no end. If you intend to spend the night on the island, be prepared to have your wallet lightened substantially, especially in season (Memorial Day to Labor Day).
For overnight accommodations, the most famous place on the island is the Grand Hotel, which has the longest covered porch of any building in the world (660 ft./200 meters). It'll set you back over $400/night. There's no air conditioning. It was built in 1887 and is perfectly imperfect. They finished it in three months. Even to wander the grounds, you have to pay $10 per their signage. On a sunny summer day, it's beautiful, especially with all of the flags flying along the porch. If you aren't inclined to pay through the nose here, the B&Bs, during summer, would probably set you back around $300/night, but don't quote me on that. (The more frugal folks -- like me -- stay in Mackinaw City, slightly expensive, but reasonable, and take day trips to the island.
Speaking of "in season," Mackinac Island has less than 500 year-round residents. Yet, I think they clear 2 million tourists a year. The majority of them come from May-September.
To support that massive influx, there are 600 horses on the island in summer, but only about 200 stay on for winter.
More than the horses, they can't survive without a temporary summer workforce. On the island (and also in Mackinaw City and possibly St. Ignace), you'll find the majority of summer workers are eastern European. They stay until the end of September. This year, I bumped into Turkish, Polish, Montenegran, Serbian, Kosovan, and I'm not sure which other nationalities. Expect to meet some incredibly friendly and happy Europeans.
What's the history of this area? Recent (1600-now), is about all most people focus on. It was originally Native American land, then the French arrived, followed by Brits, and finally Americans.
As a result, there are forts around. Michilimackinac (in Mackinaw City) was the first fort, from the Brits, then Americans. Then the Brits relocated to the island (more strategic) and built Fort Mackinac. While at Fort Mackinac, they also decided to build a more rudimentary fort on the highest ground on the island: Fort George (which the Americans renamed Fort Holmes).
The forts were eventually in the Americans' hands and Fort Mackinac was garrisoned until 1895. So here's your fun trivia: Yellowstone National Park was the first national park created in the U.S. (and world) in 1872. The second national park in the U.S.? Mackinac Island, actually.
The island was a national park (as the parks were actually administered by the military prior to the creation of the Department of the Interior & National Park Service) and it was maintained as a national park until 1895 when the federal government trimmed back a bit and stopped having an active presence on the island. (At this point, the island went to the state and the entire island is now basically Mackinac State Park.)
As it's a state park, you'll find the majority of the island is actually natural -- lots of woods and beautiful walks and trails. Should you have a little wanderlust to get away from the town, you'll find the following:
1. A small airport in the middle of the island.
2. Two 9 hole golf courses (Jewel & Wawashkamo), though you could be creative and call it one where the front and back nine are a bit away from each other.
3. Cemeteries: Protestant, Catholic, and Military. (The military cemetery is one of only 5 in the nation that are permitted to fly flags at half mast year-round due to the unknown soldiers buried here.)
4. Hiking trails that lead to Fort Holmes, Skull Cave, Arch Rock, and other areas on the interior. (Skull Cave is very underwhelming in its current condition, though its history is interesting.)
Among the buildings in town that don't fall into one of the generic categories mentinoed above, you'll find at least 4 churches, the old fur trading store, a police station, a U.S. post office, a school, an old county courthouse (not current as Michilimackinac County no longer exists), an art museum, and a yacht club.
Fort Mackinac, by the way, is actually in town and the price of admission is $13.50 as of this writing. They have soldiers in period uniforms do weapons demonstrations (rifle, cannon), and have all of the buildings maintained to the time of its use (1875-95 or so). Some of the views of the town, Marquette Park, and cove with its two lighthouses are nice. Is it worth $13.50? I don't think so, but hey...if you're only here once, you ought to have a look, especially if the weather's nice and sunny.
During the summer, you'll find that June is the best time to come for flowers -- so many lilacs that the air smells more like flowers than horses. There are also the two boat regattas (Port Huron to Mackinac & Chicago to Mackinac) that end here in the straits. I believe those are in May or June.
All in all, there's a good reason that Mackinac Island is usually voted one of the ten best summer getaways in the country. It's unforgettable and, more than that, it's relaxing. Even with the excessive crowds. I know I haven't covered everything, but it's certainly enough to give you a good idea.

Tabebuia roseo-alba, known as White Ipê, ipê-branco or lapacho blanco, is a tree native to Cerrado and Pantanal vegetation in Brazil, but also appears in Argentina (especially in the "Esteros del Ibera" wetlands) and more rarely in Paraguay.
This plant is frequently used as an ornamental plant and honey plant in Brazil and Argentina. On the other hand, its flowers seem to be less popular with many hummingbirds than those of other Tabebuia, being visited mostly by the occasional generalist species like the Gilded Sapphire (Hylocharis chrysura).

This was a rather plain tan wall (see two pictures back) with evidence that there had been a large red key logo for Key Bank. I inverted the image to get some interest to it, and have fun with some artistic techniques. There wasn't much rust at all, but I made it look like it. I like how the rain streaks show more in this version where water ran down behind the lower part of the old sign. I used some equalization, oil paint, embossing and color balance effects, Best viewed at least moderately large to see them.

Dopo il fantastico tour tutto esaurito della scorsa estate The Kolors tornano sul palco per “OK LIVE 2016”. L’appuntamento con Stash e la sua band è per lunedì 16 maggio all’Alcatraz di Milano.
I The Kolors sono una band italiana formata da Stash Fiordispino (voce, chitarra), Alex Fiordispino (batteria) e Daniele Mona (synth). Appassionati di rock e musica elettronica, il trio inizia a collaborare a Milano nel 2010, quando arriva anche il primo ingaggio professionale, che li porta a diventare la resident band di uno dei locali più longevi della città: Le Scimmie.
Il loro nome inizia a crescere all’interno della scena milanese dei club undeground e nel 2011 producono l’inedito ‘I Don’t Give A Funk’. MTV New Generation programma il video di ‘I Don’t Give A Funk’ , al quale partecipa l’amico Andy dei Bluvertigo. Dopo alcuni concerti all’estero tra Stoccolma (Middag), Berlino (White Trash) e Londra (Runway), i Kolors aprono così i concerti italiani di Paolo Nutini (luglio 2012), Gossip (novembre 2012), Hurts (marzo 2013) e sono tra gli special guest della data romana di Atoms For Peace (giugno 2013).
I The Kolors partecipano all’edizione 2015 i “Amici”, programma condotto da Maria De Filippi su Canale 5 aggiudicandosi la vittoria e anche il premio della critica.

Had fun tonight. Used the fat extension tube with the 80-400 lens for a super-long-reach macro gun. Last year I used the tubes with the 300 lens for dragonflies, and this works even better. Only it takes a tripod to tame the blur.
Also, used the Exposure "glamor shot" setting to soften this photo, then cut a hole in that layer to get back some detail and texture on the base of the flower. What fun!
Used my Year of the Rat soft block relief carving for more bookmarks. Printed in white chalk ink pad on scrap black Stonehenge printmaking paper. White and silver gel pen and orange colored pencil. A bit more somber as the times require...but, Now! With Orange Hair!
Used by Turkish Airlines for 2 years before returning to Swiss and now in Swiss new c/s taxing towards 01L as "Swiss 249 Whiskey"
Using black and white in an attempt to reveal the depth and texture of my tough soles. I'm pleased with the result!

The Princess Royal officially opens Wales First World War Centenary Wood, Coed Ffos Las
It’s been four years in the making, with many hundreds of local people including children helping to plant the trees, and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has now formally opened Coed Ffos Las, Wales’ First World War Centenary Wood, in the Gwendraeth Valley in Carmarthenshire. As the Woodland Trust’s (Coed Cadw’s) most recently planted wood in Wales, it's part of the The First World War Centenary Woods project which is helping to plant millions of native trees to commemorate the First World War.
The Princess Royal was joined by around 40 invited guests on 2 July, who saw demonstrations highlighting the hugely important role that woods and trees played in the First World War. There was horse ploughing, greenwood working and a working blacksmith. The 157 Royal Logistics Corp were also present, a company created as a result of the First World War, who have helped plant the trees at Coed Ffos Las and who are proud to have The Princess Royal as their Patron.
Her Royal Highness then formally unveiled a plaque displaying the name of the life-sized War Horse Sculpture which forms a special Commemorative Feature of the site. Created out of Corten steel by the designer Steve Tomlinson, the statue was named Yr Arwr / Hero, after the poem which won Hedd Wyn the Chair at the 1917 National Eisteddfod. The name was chosen by Jane Hutt, formerly Leader of the House at the National Assembly for Wales, from ideas suggested in a public competition for names organised last summer in which nearly one hundred people took part.
Natalie Buttriss, Director of Wales for the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome The Princess Royal to Coed Ffos Las. Working with the local community and with the support of our members and sponsors we have created a beautiful, poignant new woodland which incorporates 90,000 native trees. There is also an orchard, bee hives, a pond, an area of woodland which can be coppiced, open areas for enjoying the panoramic views, as well as the amazing war horse sculpture as a commemorative feature.
“Coed Ffos Las is a unique woodland in Wales which we are using to tell the story of wood, woodland, workers and soldiers in the First World War. A huge percentage of Wales’ ancient woodland was felled for a wide range of uses in the Great War. Ammunition cases, vehicle bodies, gun carriages, matches, pit props, even hazel hurdles were used to build the walls of trenches. Wales is, in many ways, still feeling the environmental impact of a war that wreaked havoc on soldiers’ and communities’ lives.”
“The creation of the Coed Ffos Las has cost around £1.2m in total. The Woodland Trust is hugely grateful to everyone who supported our fundraising appeal for the site, to our lead partner in the project, Sainsbury’s, to Welsh Government’s Plant! initiative and the players of the National Lottery, through the Heritage Lottery Fund, all of which have generously supported different aspects of the project.”
The First World War Centenary Woods project is supported by the Trust’s lead partner Sainsbury's, helping to plant millions of native trees to commemorate the First World War. Mike Coupe, the company’s CEO, said: “We’re pleased to support such a fitting memorial to those affected by the First World War. It’s important to our customers and colleagues, and commemorative to the colleagues who fell during World War One.

I had more or less decided that I was switching from expensive DSLRs to using the Sony NEX-7 [and whatever replaced it] as the camera that I would use for street photography. I was hoping to upgrade from the NEX-7 to the A7R but while I might be able to afford the body this side of Christmas there is no way that I could afford a set of suitable lenses within a reasonable time period.
At the end of May I got the opportunity to purchase a Sigma DP3 Merrill at €399.00 including delivery to Dublin so based on a number of reviews I decided to take a gamble and purchase one. I had to wait almost two months and I was about to cancel the order but it arrived a few days ago and I got a chance to test it today.
There is no doubting the fact that the DP3 Merrill is very different to anything that I have used to date [including the original DP1 or DP2] and while I am glad that I got it there are many issues. The main problem is battery life, there is no way that 45 photographs per charge is acceptable. The second problem is that Adobe Lightroom does not recognise the output from the DP3 Merrill [I only shoot in RAW] so one must use the software that is supplied by Sigma. Sigma Photo Pro is not as bad as some may have you believe but in my case I am not at all keen to add another stage to the process.
The third problem is that I am really limited to shooting at ISO100 so it is a waste of time shooting in poor light and there is plenty of that here in Dublin.
The Sigma DP3 uses an excellent 50mm f/2.8 prime lens which is the equivalent of a 75mm optic on a 35mm camera. The lens design features ten elements in eight groups, and there's a seven-bladed aperture diaphragm. Focusing is possible to as close as 8.9 inches (22.6cm), and maximum magnification is 1:3 (0.33x). There's no image stabilisation which may make the camera less suitable for street photography.
