Westbound train CPSEY, passes thru the confines of Rock Creek Canyon, west of Crater. This shot requires a mile or 2 walk in on the Craig Branch north of Bond. Pretty crazy how the railroad built to P-Burg thru Crater Loops and out of this canyon. The railroad has been climbing since they left Bond.
Always nice to catch a clean motor leading a train, bonus points for being a clean EMD and being able to hid the POS GE that was trailing.
MP 16.5 on the UP Kansas Sub.
rauf und runter
Ich weiß nicht, ob und wann ich überhaupt schon mal so viele Treppen rauf und runter bin, wie am letzten Samstag.... ;-)

EMD Tier IV UP 3044 leads a mixed manifest train around the long curve coming into Loring this morning. If you only get a chance to shoot one train in the morning then you better make it a good one.
Just a tad bit too much tree on the lead truck than I would like, but maybe that tree will get removed soon too. Who knows. We’re not in a National Forest, yet.
These Tier IV’s are starting to get the UP piss brick treatment. Look at the roof of this unit and you will see just how dirty they are starting to get. It won’t be long and they will look like the EMD SD70M second out. Hot garbage.
UP 9403 leading a long train of empty autoracks up Cajon pass near Silverwood. You know they are empties because California doesn't have any plants that build cars in SoCal anymore, and hasn't had for quite some time.
UP 3794 heads the WCLOVG-08 (Work: Caliente, NV to Oroville, CA: Gang) westbound near Milepost 373.
After this shot was taken, I shredded a rear tire, and eventually had to limp the 150 miles home on a "donut" style spare.
UP SD70ACe #1989 passes the coal load-out of Justus Coal Company in Revilo, Kentucky with NS 46Z grain train in tow. This load-out, though idled, is the last great stand in McCreary County coal. A place once home to the mighty Stearns Coal Company. This simple black diamond product was once the lifeblood of this area, much like most of Appalachia. Unfortunately, again like most of the region, it's time has seemingly departed. The large Justus mine stands still as a symbol of yesterday.
I was originally headed to Harriman, TN to set up for this, but by luck, ran into Matt Jones and Justin McCravey in Wartburg and decided to turn north and head for Kentucky. This proved to be a very wise move as this train would not make Harriman until well after dark. Now looking back, I'm glad I setup at Justus instead...
Virgin Trains East Coast 43300 leads this spectacle along the Birmingham to Derby main line with Network Rails 43013, Grand Centrals 43423, Pioneer 41001 with matching stock and East Midlands 43048 bringing up the rear. The working was 5Z43 06.29 St Philips Marsh to Derby Etches Park
Monarch butterfly face. He is aged and his eyes are battered, but his tube-like tongue or proboscis in good shape and all wound up in a coil.

This is one of the shots that will be used for a local shortfilm called "All revved up"
A very funny comedy created and directed by Dan Thebeau. We had a photo shoot last night and this was my first try at using the dark field lighting technique.
Strobist info: AB800 placed behind a small sheet of black foam core. The alien bee was bounced on a white wall.
Also two small strobes shot on oposite sides of the model against the wall to give more highlights on the side. Asked Dan and Sasha hold a black flag in front of the visor to cut down on reflections.
Triggered via skyports and optical triggers.
