i really like the way that tree fit, i was looking up, tired on a hike and there it was. I moved a bit to fit everything in the gaps, softened everything and went darker trying to aim this towards a painting.
As Davey & I walked over the beach we noticed the usual line of photographers on the rocks facing the Castle. So we picked our spot in the line up & waited for the dawn to unfold. :-)

I'm hoping someone can help me out with the train symbol. From the radio conversation with the dispatcher, it sounded like this train runs from Altoona to Adams, picking up cuts of sand from the different plants along the line. The crew left Altoona light and the conductor said they'd be picking up cars at Diamond Valley and Humbird.
The Clematis vine reaches for the sky in the spring garden. I've been too sick and too busy to properly maintain my garden, so for the near future my garden photos will feature a narrow depth of field.
Shortly after sunrise at the big curve at Krieder with the long shadows off the empty coal train rolling west on the Kansas Sub.
My daughter found this little dude on the ceiling. Great opportunity for a cool macro shot! Pretty excited about it.
Last up for today, jumping ahead to November 19th, 2017, for this photo taken in the market section. Unfortunately, this is where we begin to get into the sad part :( You may recognize this as the former home of this old up&up brand promotional sign (from 2009!!)... I was saddened to discover it had unceremoniously been removed from the store, with only its empty sign frame left to sit as a reminder of what once was. (Note the new black aisle marker placards above the former sign, too: almost too much change to bear at once, lol!)
Unfortunately, this was only a sign (...well, former sign, I suppose :P ) of what was to come elsewhere. This store has indeed yet to remodel... but that doesn't mean some of its signage hasn't been removed. Confusing, right? I'll explain... two Sundays from now. Be sure to stick around...

UP stack train from last night rolling past Loring and the the remnants of a 20+ car pileup that happened a few weeks back. The cars have been sitting there long enough now that the weeds have grown up around them. I'd venture to say they might still be there when the snow starts to fly. It's a real crying shame that the derailment didn't take out some more trees along the ROW.
This Rax location opened as part of the once national Rax fast food chain in 1984. The restaurant has not been modified in any notable way since then. As far as I can tell everything here is original (except for some kitchen equipment and a TV in the dining room), including the signs on the exterior. The only big change here has been the removal of the salad bar. Lancaster seems to be a town that likes nostalgia to a degree; I noticed a number of other things in Lancaster like a drive-in movie theater that was still up and running.

We discovered this old, abandoned farm near here recently. Two men were standing in the driveway and we asked if we could take some pictures. With their OK, we started working our way back through the property. Back behind the empty house, and the falling down barn, we found this old 40's or 50's era Chevrolet dump truck.
The truck's back tires were sunk deep into the earth while the front end was blocked up to keep it from sinking away. I was looking into the sun when I took five exposures at varying exposures that later were blended into a HDR shot in NIK HDR Efex Pro 2. Then, I ran it through NIK Color Efex Pro 4 and got it the way I wanted it to look.
About HDR shots: I like them. I like the realistic ones and the ones that are over the top. I did push this one a bit towards over the top---but I like the way it pops. HDR is a great tool for getting the exposure correct under wide dynamic range situations---like this one.
I made this image with my Pentax K5 and Pentax 18-135 lens.

"they" say bad news comes in 3. i hope that's indeed the case. other than all the technological mishaps i've experiencing lately, in the last two days, i have managed to burn a hole through a favorite skirt (don't know how to use an iron anymore), break my bag while running for the bus (didn't lose the contents *whew* and still got on the bus *whew +*) and, finally tonight, break one of my fave pair of red shoes. (actually, i really had nothing specific to do with this other than to wear them today).
so yeah, there's definitely a need for clean up in aisle 3.

We rarely subject him to dressing up. Like any boy his age, his job is to resist and complain.
He's also definitely not a serious guy but the 'tude he sports is all about giving me flack about taking his photo.
I love how grown up he looks, yet it sends a twinge of sadness about just how short childhood is. Sigh. I'm just thankful he's young for his age so there's plenty of time...
Ehrang shed, on the outskirts of Trier, provided locomotives for the routes to Saarbrücken and Koblenz (via the Moselle Valley). This shed could always be relied upon to provide a fair amount of drifting smoke and my visit on 23rd April 1972 was no exception. Lined up around one of the turntables at the depot were 'Jumbo' 2-10-0 Class 044 (Baureihe 044) No.044 119-6, Class 001 Pacific (Baureihe 001) No. 001 150-2, which had been a Moselle Valley passenger engine, but was not in steam on this occasion, Class 023 (Baureihe 023) 2-6-2 No.023 018-5, Class 050 (Baureihe 050) 2-10-0 No.052 712-7 and another class 044. What a variety of motive power! This image has been recovered from what I would have described as one of my 'bin-job' underexposed Agfa CT18 transparencies taken with a Halina camera, but the content I considered was too good to throw away at the time and I am now pleased to have retained it. Thank goodness for modern technology, but it took some time to restore.
