The necessity to run the power around the balloon track at the Council Bluffs yard to get 1943 facing the right way meant any hope of getting light on the departure faded.
I settled for a blue hour shot of light power (again...) closing in on Heritage Park.
There's only a couple of occasions that I consider shooting up a tree. 1) If there's a well built female tree surgeon working above me. 2) Fall foliage with good light that allows for a nicely exposed blue sky above. Unfortunately, I had to settle for option #2! LOL. In all honesty, I know these types of shots are a bit over-done, but, not by me....yet. I'll use any excuse to capture the beauty of nature...cliched shot or not.

Can you smell the paint?
Bailey yard diesel shop, October/1984, moments after hostler uncoupled unit after moving from the paint track. Looks sharp, every detail, including the horn, receiving attention.....wait; doh...missed a spot...cab awning!. Disclaimer; about 90% sure of date, but I know it's in fall of 1984. Roxborough St. Pk. With elevations ranging from
5,900 to 7,600 feet, Roxborough’s
landscape beautifully illustrates a
Front Range transition from plains
to mountains. On the west border
of the park, the rugged granite
of Carpenter Peak is flanked by
elegantly layered gneiss. The red
sandstone spires of the Fountain
Formation accent the foothills as
they dip away and into the scrub
oaks. The Roxborough landscape
is characterized by two more
sandstone hogbacks: the Lyons
and the Dakota, before rolling into
prairie grasslands to the east—
encompassing over 1.3 billion years
of geologic time
UP 7217 (AC4400CW) leads an eastbound manifest out of Global 3 past the Rochelle Railroad Park in Rochelle, IL.
After taking the winter months off Union Pacific FEF3 #844 returned to the mainline on April 10th, 2017 for a 'break-in' run between Cheyenne, WY and Greeley, CO. On the return leg of its journey 844 is working up grade towards Speer, WY with a train of support cars in tow. Diesel 2760 spent most of the day in various dynamics notches simulating a load for the big ALCo to pull.

Being a relatively low priority move, the Spirit only made it as far as the first siding south of Omaha at Murray before being instructed to take the siding to meet three northbounds. Here they creep past the old wooden elevator in town to the south end of the siding to kick up the feet for a while.

Medanak, first reversing station of the Khyber Pass Railway. The line continued on the upper left to the next reverse at Changhi and further on to the Afghan border at Torkham where it stopped just a few meters from the border line. The railway was opened in 1925 to Landi Kotal and 1926 to the border - this later section with two reversing stations was already closed in 1932 after only 6 years of use. The Peshawar to Landi Kotal line remained open for regular trafic with one train a week until 1982 and for special trains between 1993 and 2007. It is closed since due to severe washout. Essential reading about this line is 'Permanent way through the Khyber' written by the line's building engineer Victor Bayley. February 1997

I wanted to take a pic "looking up" at something for Maelia's fun 7DWF group, so I put a Star-6 filter on the lens and went for it. I'd never used a star filter before and was surprised at how the pics came out!!
Some lights had no star effects, others looked like this pic. Not really a "star", but you can see the 6 star-ish flares coming from the light. (It's a 5 fixture LED lamp, so the other flares are spilling over from the other LEDs.) Interesting. I'll have to experiment some more. Such fun. :-)
p.s. I was just reading about star filters.. so interesting!! I think I got this effect because I was so close the the subject. "Subject-to-lens distance: The closer you are to the light that is producing the star effect, the larger the star effect will be in your frame." Plus using a smaller aperture, plus etc!! I'll have to print the article to read more. ;-)
Overlooking the boats down at Keyhaven this morning which are often lined up in an orderly fashion.
Met up with talented photographer and fellow Westonian, Simon (Rep001) for a sunrise shoot followed by coffee and croissants. Not the most vibrant one but very moody with some interesting light and lots of possibilities.
Thanks Simon for coming over my way so early and sharing some helpful tips it was great to meet you :)
