Grackle fluffing up its shining, iridescent plumage

54" for Norden…between 00:00 on Monday January 9th and 00:00 Tuesday January 10th 54" of fresh snow fell at Norden at the top of Union Pacific's Sierra crossing. While not the most snow recorded in a 24-hour period (top 2 or 3) it did showcase Union Pacific's snow fighters, who kept the Sierra open to commerce under the ever growing snow pack. A few days after the big dump a eastbound Union Pacific manifest climbs through Norden moments from entering the west portal of 'the big hole' (tunnel 41).

As I turned off the freeway I noticed one of 'our' Australian Hobbies flying around. By the time I stopped and grabbed the camera it was sitting on its favourite perch, checking out the smorgasbord of small birds no doubt.

Two ratty looking geeps drag UP 4141 and the casket car up from the BNSF Gibson Yard. On it's way back from being displayed, the UP has to pass though Gibson Yard and use the mainline to get back to home track.

Although George was actually trailing, the crew left the lights on making this shot actually look decent.

17 of Union Pacific's finest hold-outs from the 'Streamliner' era are surrounded by the Pagodas Canyon's ruby red cliffs on the former D&RGW Dotsero cut-off. The special train is making a round trip run between Denver-Dotsero-Denver and is now returning eastbound having just highballed Dotsero, CO a few minutes previous. Today the breathe-taking scenery found on the former Rio Grande in Colorado (and Utah), including this narrow passage in the mountains which the Colorado River and railroad share space, can still be viewed daily from onboard the California Zephyr….albeit Amtrak's California Zephyr.

Eastbound tonnage bound for North Platte, Nebraska climbs the Sierra just below Troy. The center foreground was once the #2 main track right of way that pierced Sierra granite via tunnel 40. After the decision was made to abandon tunnel 40, the new alignment followed the original CP (track 1) alignment around the outside of the mountain.

Heading toward the July 4th long holiday weekend in the gardens and the coneflowers are almost ready to pop. :)

UP 3035 leads a westbound manifest train around the curve near MP 59 on the UP Kansas Sub this evening. Another EMD Tier IV leading a train in the humid evening air with the smoke of the wildfires in the west giving the sunset a different glow.

Red rhododendrons bloom in my front garden.

My cousin Penny doggedly trying to finish a smartphone “Alice in Wonderland” clue-driven game that we started in the city. Alas it was neither well-designed or interesting, so I lost interest early on and started taking photos instead while Penny insisted on continuing. She finally gave up after 4 hours.

North of Touhy, I missed a turn, which ended up being a blessing and lead us right to this shot from the highway. Bonus points for getting the whole train.

Bought some flowers at Lowes the other day to fill in some hanging baskets. Probably not an ideal hanging basket flower, but I couldn't pass up this interesting flower. It seems to be doing well so far.

Made a quick trip to Grand Teton National Park, but allowed some train time to and from. First one I photographed was this manifest in the Portneuf River canyon east of Inkom, ID. I love this shot, and it may be my favorite from the trip, even with the amazing views at GTNP.

We caught up with the 29G we saw at Salem earlier for this seen in the middle of Christiansburg Grade. Still gloomy, but the fog on the hills added some ambience.

UP 8091 (C45AH...I think) brings two visitors to town in the form of CSX 748 & 522.

This eastbound City of Industry to Global1 (ZCIG1) is about to stop in Salt Lake City's North Yard for a crew change.

These blue flowers were the hot-spot for several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at Brookside Gardens. It was fascinating to watch several of them work the flowers over time, occasionally flying off in pairs as they "fought" over territory, and resting on the nearby branches from their exhausting flights. This female checks this flower for nectar as both benefit from the interaction, she gets the nectar and the flower gets pollinated.

In the Teutoburg Forest, there was a hunting station where, luckily, the only hunter present was the one hunting with a camera. I find ladders and stairs to be a rather fascinating subject, one that I haven't given much consideration to before.
