Photoshop Elements 5.0 TUTORIAL
Creating a multi-image picture using multiple extractions
First of all, you need good source material. Completely unplanned, I ended up with several photos of my daughter that were very similar and showed her in a series of 5 poses (imitating the dance moves of a girl in a wheelchair on her Elmo video). Some of the photos were a bit out of focus but I decided to use them any way.
The first thing to do is refine your photos (which I still need to do - her face is too dark). Correct color, lighting, sharpness, etc. Next, move on to the extractions. Work on copies of your photos so you will have unchanged originals – that way you can always start over if you completely screw up the extraction.
I extracted Annali’s figure from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th images. I left the 3rd image un-extracted to use as the background. Depending on how you want the final images arranged, you might need to extract the figure from the background image as well so that you can layer it with the other extractions. If you have figures with very well-defined edges you can use the Magic Extractor tool. Since my images had pretty subtle edges and I wanted to include the shadows I decided to do my extractions manually.
I first created a rough extraction and then refined it until I had a good edge. I concentrated on refining the head and torso and left the legs somewhat rough. I used a large eraser brush set at 100% opacity (approx 400 pixels) to punch out large areas of background. The foreground and background colors were set to standard black on white. I used the Magic Eraser tool to change the now white background to transparent. I kept reducing the size of my brush and zooming in closer on the image to refine the edges more and more. My final corrections were with a 3 pixel brush. Don't forget the enclosed areas between arms and legs.
One tip I have is to click frequently instead of clicking and dragging. That way, when you make a mistake and click undo you will only have a little bit of work to repeat instead of large swaths of pixels. Save your file frequently!
Once you are satisfied with your extractions, start layering them on the background image. Play around with the layering, position, and size of each figure. Once I had the figures placed where I wanted I realized the edges in the grassy part of the picture needed refining and some of the shadows overlapped in an unsatisfactory way.
Click the eyeball next to your background layer to turn it off. Switch to an eraser brush of approximately 40 pixels width with approximately 25 to 30% opacity and start smoothing out the edges of the extractions where they overlap. Turn on the background layer to see your results. Always start with small changes and increase as you go. Ctrl+Z (“undo”) is your friend! Keep erasing/smoothing until you are satisfied. (I still need to refine some of the shadows on this image but I got fairly close, if I do say so myself.) [Adjustment layers could be used here as well but I'm not up to describing that process when others have done it much better.]
Depending on how consistent the background lighting is you might need to dodge and burn to make the extractions blend more realistically. I can see that the far right figure above is placed on darker grass. I need to make her legs blend in better to remove the glow that surrounds them.
Save your work and pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

What girl doesn't love nice-smelling bath treats? I came up with this tutorial for a lavender-scented salt scrub to whisk away dead skin and leave you buffed and glowing. You can also pot it up and give it away as presents.

Here's my first Photoshop CS3 photo manipulation . It doesn't look as good as the one on the tutorial and I think I might have broken my autonomic blinking response staring at the thing, learning photoshop is like driving in traffic.
I don't actually want to look at any more fire today thank you.
