it was a bit (understatement!) of a surprise to find turtles in South Dakota...
Check the clearness of the water
The different colors on the turtles shell are different for each location, pertaining to the coors needed to be more survivable in their environment. Each turtle is more likely to stay hidden if its colors coordinate with its environment.
I figured I should post a couple turtle pictures because it won't be long until they disappear for the winter.
I nearly ran over this guy as I came around the bend! He seemed to have such a definite purpose to his travels that I pulled over and got out in the rain to watch his progress...

This turtle is an omnivore and eats a variety of plants and small animals.
In Vietnam, it prefers slow flowing streams and swamps. Even though much of its habitat has been turned into farmland for rice paddies, it can still sometimes survive in these new watery habitats.
However, like many other species of turtle in the Far East, it is collected to be eaten.
It is now critically endangered and close to extinction in the wild.
We were told by the girl working the tank that she is missing her front flipper, so unfortunatly, she can't be released back into the ocean. But, she seems rather happy at her new home. She's quite a big girl.
The turtle climbs out to warm up in the sand and be swarmed by many nasty tourists. It doesn't care.
This is a Eastern Painted Turtle who was crossing a busy road to lay her eggs at dusk. She was photographed near Geary, NB.
These endearing creatures are incredibly placid and unflappable. This one was surrounded by at least 6 delighted divers in an enclosed area and didn't mind how close anyone got.

Stupidly I didn't remember to photograph the nameplates next to the animals, so I'm not sure what kind of turtle this is.
