Green Turtle (Caretta caretta) at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, Sri Lanka. This is one of a number of resident turtles that have been rescued and, for various reasons, are unfit to return to the wild.
We were just about to end the day at the sanctuary when somebody called this box turtle to my attention.
Western box turtle, according to Hans Meijerhans of Holland, who saw the photo. The red eye shows that it is a male. It is apparently a grassland critter.

Snapper turtles can grow to be very large. The first time I found one, it was twice the size of my foot! They can be found near most water sources. Like most turtles, cars and dogs are the most common cause of injury. If you find one, leave it alone, unless it's near a road.
