The hawksbill is one of the rarest and most endangered of all sea turtles. It was hunted to near extinction for its shell. You can see the classic pattern on this one. There are only around 20,000 nesting females left in the wild.
A pair of turtles on a biking/hiking trail in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I’m pretty sure the turtles were on their way to lay eggs in nearby sand after coming from a Mississippi River backwater located on the other side of the bushes at right. Sea turtles return to breed at the same beach where they were born. (This is a serious problem if their home beach is now a parking lot.) No one yet knows whether turtles who get lost going from the beach to the sea have properly imprinted on their beach, and whether this will be a problem when the time comes for them to breed.
