Went for a dirt road ride last evening and we almost didn't see her. This old girl was laying her eggs and nothing was going to stop her. She didn't hiss and didn't seem upset by us so we snapped a few pics before it got too dark. We saw a couple rabbits, a partridge and lots of fireflies....no big critters, though.

This is an old photo of Bloopman, a Florida Cooter, nibbling on some anacharis. He is in a small box that I used as a "restaurant" for his meals. Turtles are messy eaters, and feeding him in his big tank was a pain!
Bloop passed away today (8/13/09) and we are all very sad. :-(
Chinese Striped-necked Turtle,
Ocadia sinensis, Hongkong.
Exotic, occurs in China, released to the wild.
Detail of the injured turtle I encountered on my ride this morning. One of it's hind legs was missing and a chunk gone from it's shell. My best guess is perhaps an Egret or Heron tried to make lunch out of it, though the injury did not look recent.
Sea Sense conducts both research and outreach programs. Its collection of data on sea turtle and dugong population sizes, incidents of egg poaching, and other information has been extremely helpful in guiding conservation projects. Armed with scientific data, Sea Sense has successfully educated local communities about threats to sea turtles and protecting their nests. (Photo courtesy of Sea Sense and the Born Free Foundation.)
A common sight in this area, a green sea turtle warms itself on the black sands of Punalu'u Beach on Hawaii, the Big Island.
I feel so lucky that I got to swim with this beautiful creature.... I stayed with it for quite a long time and it didn't seem to be bothered by me at all! I did keep my distance though, so as not to disturb it!
This spotted turtle was found april 13th 2008 crossing the street in the king farm development in Rockville, Maryland
Blandings Turtle -- sufficiently rare to cause its habitats to be declared protected areas -- seen in the Southeast Cove of Mud Lake, with his sidekick, a Painted Turtle. First Blandings I've ever seen! Britannia Woods, Apr 6, 2012.

Almost in-situ, this handsome male was sitting in the middle of the dirt road chomping down on an earthworm when found.
With this cold front hitting right after the hurricane we may
not see Gertle & her two lil buddies till spring.......
hibernation time for Terrapene carolina bauri (Florida Box Turtle).
I'm hoping to see them a few more times before they
burrow away for the winter... :)
UPDATE.... It's warming up again & Gertle is doing her
regular backyard stomp... :)
A Turtle Mocha from Cafe Mundi (perhaps the coolest coffee shop in Austin).
