It rained today. The rain followed me through Ohio, Illinois and into Iowa, so there was little chance for picture taking.

 

On my last trip to Utah, Wanda drove me crazy tyring to find just the right tuna salad sandwich for her to eat. It had be on honey whole wheat bread, contain lettuce, tomatoes with extra mayo and include a half sour pickle. It was that half sour pickle that caused all the trouble. Most eating establishments provide you with kosher dills not half sours. Luckily, at one of the rest stops in Ohio I discovered a franchise called Panera. Now, I've seen this bakery slash sandwich slash soup shop on Long Island, but never went in. I don't as a rule like franchised food, i.e. Ruby Tuesday's or The Outback, so Panera was a surprise, not only for its perfect tuna salad sandwich, but also for their black bean soup and coffee!

 

Anyway, 6 a.m. today found me standing in front of the register at the Panera on the border between Ohio and Illinois ordering a tuna salad sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayo, plus coffee and an apple danish. The coffee and apple danish were for breakfast.

 

As I wrote earlier, it rained most of the day. I had stopped before noon and gotten soup for the parents hoping to put off eating my lunch until the rain ended and I could enjoy my sandwich at one of the pretty rest stops filled with gold and red leaves. No such luck. By 1 p.m. I was so hungy I stopped at the nearest service plaza, left my parents in the car to dream whatever old people who hallucinate most of the day dream about, and headed for a picnic table under a portico provided by McDonald's.

 

It was really nice there. The air smelled so pretty that I didn't mind that the picnic table was damp. I was going to sit there for awhile, enjoy my sandwich and watch the cars and trucks speed along I80 in the rain wondering if there would be a weather related accident and would I see another dead body on the road like I did on my last trip to Utah?

 

I opened the wrapping paper containing my sandwich and.......... Oh no! No, no, no! They forgot to include my pickle! Now wait, wait! What I ask you is a tuna salad sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes and extra mayonnaise without a half sour pickle? Horrible! Awful! Yukky poo!

 

"THEY FORGOT MY PICKLE!" I was furious. I was so furious that I only ate half the sandwich. I was going to drive back to the border, demand a pickle and have that sandwich maker fired! Yes! Have him fired! I don't care how bad the economy is! I don't care if he has 3 babies! I heading back right now and make my demands!

 

But it's a 7 hour drive back into Ohio..... Okay, I'll stop on the way home and complain! They are not getting away with this. All I thought about all morning was eating and enjoying that stupid sandwich with a diet coke and a pickle! My whole afternoon has been ruined! I hope that incompetent sandwich maker is still working there when I go back!

 

Addendum: The rain stopped by the time I reached Iowa and I decided to eat the other half of the sandwich. When I opened the wrapper I found the pickle. It had fallen between the two layers of wax paper. Oops......

Die Paprika wurden mit Knoblauch, wenig Pfeffer und Salz im Olivenöl sanft gebraten. Auskühlen lassen und mit einem Stück guten Brotes geniessen. (Foto links).

Der Thunfischsalat wurde mit geschälten Tomaten, grünen Paprika, Zwiebeln und schwarzen Oliven in einer Sosse mit Weinessig und Olivenöl präsentiert (Foto rechts).

 

That was a leftover from both.

The peppers were gently fried with garlic, a little pepper and salt in olive oil (photo left).

The tuna salad was presented with peeled tomatoes, green peppers, onions and black olives in a sauce with wine vinegar and olive oil. Allow to cool and enjoy with a piece of good bread (photo right).

Los pimientos se fríen suavemente con ajo, un poco de pimienta y sal en aceite de oliva. Dejar enfriar y disfrutar con un trozo de buen pan. (foto a la izquierda).

La ensalada de atún fue presentada con tomates pelados, pimientos verdes, cebollas y aceitunas negras en una salsa con vinagre de vino y aceite de oliva (foto derecha).

Morning prep time: 5 minutes. Tip when making sandwiches on rolls: use your fingers to tear out some of the soft bread inside of the roll, which creates a convenient space for messy fillings that would otherwise fall out. Yellowfin Tuna steaks with Smoked Trout with mixed Italian salad, wild Rocket, Tomatoes, yellow pepper, salad onions with herbs, black pepper, olive oil and pasta pesto salad. 6-10-2013 - About 3 hours into our 13 hour flight we were served our first meal - Dinner.

 

Starter - Tuna salad

Side - Bread roll with cheese, crackers and butter

Main - Chicken, mash potato, broccoli and red cabbage with gravy.

Dessert - Strawberry cheesecake

Drinks - Pepsi max and water

 

All in all a very nice meal as inflight food goes. The chicken was very tasty as was the strange broccoli it came with.

I'm upset!

 

Last July for my seventeenth birthday my Mom purchased me my Canon XT Rebel. It has been a treat having such a beautiful camera until NOW. Basically my camera ALWAYS gives me an ERROR 99 [a lens error] I’ve put the lens back on back off, had other photographers put it back on. Still repeatedly gives me the error. So the other day, I pop into Best Buy [I wish I would have got it somewhere else but there is no where else around in Minnesota, my Mom likes seeing it in person before buying it or I’d buy online]. I have a four year warranty mind you. They kidnap my camera away from me, my heart breaks. They say the battery is dead. I point stretching my arm out that the battery IS NOT dead. I looked at them clueless and with heart break. My camera is like a sibling for me. I take care of it; I take it everywhere, etcetera. I have nothing else that compares the relationship of the one I have with my camera. They find nothing wrong that they can fix in the store. They say that they can send it away for a month or two, most likely more because of the summer season. I look disappointed and take my camera back. I grunt my way out the door, reminding myself why I’d always been a Nikon girl. But I was a trader; I changed because the Nikon DSLR didn’t fit my hand correctly. The whole ten minute ride home from Best Buy I reminded myself of the mistake I made picking a Canon.

 

I am at the turning point where I possibly plan on selling my XT. But then I remember I got a boat load of accessories. Not hard for selling, but still, I don’t want to deal with the hassle. I just want a camera that functions. I got my point and shoot but when I’m planning on starting a photo business this summer, this doesn’t look good. My heart is breaking over this. I’m so torn what to do. Worst part is my friends who have the identical camera with a TWO year warranty basically just got handed an XTi when they took it in and complained about the problem. Whatever, I’m just depressed over this. Photography is my life and I’ve never been this close on giving up. I am not a quitter but when something this drastic happens I rethink if I am really making the right choice.

Contents of one French Military Combat Ration "CRC" (NATO approved): Lamb stew, Tuna salad, Sardines, Cookies, Pudding, Green Tea, Coffee, Chocolate bars, Peanut Bars... In areas where French and U.S. forces operate these are traded with MRE's from 3:1 to 5:1 depending on region. These are heavier than MRE's but are favored for the more flavorful canned meat dishes (chicken stew, lamb stew, beef stew) as well as the very popular Tuna Salad.

Since it's Lent, I've got to do the no meat Fridays, and that means getting a little more inspired when making my lunch. This Friday was tuna sandwiches. I've never consulted a recipe book on how to make tuna salad. I pretty much do whatever I please, but I think my tuna salad's probably pretty much the same as everyone else's. It eats well.

 

Recipe's in the notes. I realize this isn't a very exciting recipe post.

 

I add quite a bit of black pepper and crushed red pepper which makes it spicy. It's surprising for tuna. If you don't like spicy, then so be it.

Colorful and yet healthy, this tuna salad that we ordered for lunch after taking a dip from the beach was a welcome treat. The olives and the capers made the nonetheless bland tuna very tasty and the sweet corn that was added which is really unusual for a tuna salad gave a hint sweetness to the whole platter.

Vegetarian tuna (which is similar to canned tuna) with some kewpie mayonaise, cilantro, spring onion, worcestersauce, limejuice, salt and pepper. With some cucumbercubes.

 

I'm not a vegetarian and I'm quite indifferent to the meat-or-no-meat-dilemma, so I like to think I'm pretty much impartial in this matter. So trust me when I say this vegetarian "no-tuna" is pretty decent to eat. It tastes a little different from the cheap canned tuna we normally have, but you could actually say it tastes a little better!

 

It didn't look better though. It looked a bit "split". But the taste was wonderfull. No reason (apart from the price) not to use this vegetarian option.

Tuna salad with chickpeas, tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum and onion, plus a few steamed buns.

 

The steamed buns are Chinese-style hua juan (花卷), "flower rolls", which are made with a yeast dough that's brushed with a mix of chopped spring onion, oil and salt before being twisted into a kind of flowery shape, and then pan-steamed. I also added some black sesame to this batch.

 

I prefer the pan-steaming method over just putting them into a normal steamer basket, because that way the buns get a nicely browned and crispy bottom part while being soft and fluffy on top.
