"While I wait for your words

a heavy silence falls

fills the space

uninterrupted.

Easier indeed

to trust to silence

than to trust in words

though silence itself has rusted."

In August 991, Ealdorman Byrhtnoth and his English ‘levies’ met a Viking force that had first sacked Ipswich. Details of the battle are provided by the old English Poem ‘The Battle of Maldon with survives in an eighteenth century transcription.

The Vikings had presumably beached their long ships on the Northsea Island and attempted to cross to the mainland by the causeway.

Byrhtnoth chivalrously allowed them to cross before attacking them. Things did not go well – Byrthnoth was slain and though his men fought on to the last – they were defeated.

More details can be seen on the Battlefields Trust web site at the following link.
