Winter

El invierno nos recuerda que siempre hay belleza y luz, incluso en los momentos más fríos.

Winter reminds us that there is always beauty and light, even in the coldest moments.

Red-tailed hawk on clear sunny morning.

I took this shot as sunset was approaching, in a very rugged area where it was impossible to set up my tripod with good footing because of all the branches tangled up on the ground like vines. But then I discovered by rocking my camera on the tripod [as if it were a monopod], it was possible to catch a ray of flickering light piercing thru the trees. At f 1.8, the bokeh appeared magical like dancing spheres of heavenly light. I did my best to brace the camera so there was little camera movement at an exposure of 1/320 sec.

Having a play with backlighting in the early morning again with the Goldfinches in my garden. It was pretty brisk out there, I would think a good couple of degree below freezing with a brisk wind, as you can see ruffling it's feathers. But it was worth it if I can get a few decent shots like this.

Juvy Green Heron spreads its wings to minimize the depth of its dive into Horsepen Bayou. In the 20-or-so strikes from this fishing platform that I observed, this was the only instance that it lost its grip and went in. But even here, it had already captured its prey and was in full control of its trajectory.

This summer I have had the chance to do some nature photo shoots while also tooling around the tri-state area taking in a few day trips. In early August I was in Stockton, Illinois and stopped at the Woodbine Golf Course and Restaurant. It was a beautiful setting as I sat outside for some lunch. A variety of Flowers will be featured in this series. Photo Images Credited to Vickie L Klinkhammer of Vickielynne Photography and Designs (VLP & Designs). A European Starling in the backyard Garry oak tree. I’m always amazed by these birds, such striking beauty and mesmerizing stare.

Starlings turn from glossy and dark in summer to spotted and white in winter without shedding their feathers. The new feathers they grow in fall have bold white tips which gives them their spotty look. By spring, these spotted tips would have worn away with the rest of the feather being dark and iridescent brown...scientists term this seasonal change in plumage “wear molt.”

Starlings are great vocal mimics, learning the calls of up to 20 different species including the Eastern Wood-Pewee, Killdeer, meadowlarks, Northern Bobwhite, Wood Thrush, Red-tailed Hawk, American Robin, Northern Flicker, and many others. (Source AllAboutBirds.org).
