Peabody Coal of Kentucky was an early proponent of remote control diesel engines. This RS3 was remote equippend for shoving cars through the facility. The remote caught fire, though, and you can see the blackened area of the cab and a little bit of the nose where the fire burned. Peabody sent 957 out for repairs and returned it to duty a short time later.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Chattanooga, TN in October 1992
In the early fall of 1992 Dad found this derelict old GE 45-ton center-cab switcher at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, TN. There is no number or identifying markings visilble or discernable on this unit. Every list of TVRM engines I find does not include it. Does anyone know if TVRM still has this unit? Does anyone know this unit's history?

Part four in my ongoing Diesel Cab series.
This is the cab of Montana Rail Link SDP40-2XR #290. This rare unit is ex-BN SDP40 9851/xx-BN 6395/nee-GN 321 and was rebuilt to Dash 2 specs by MRL after they acquired it in 1989.
On March 5, 2008 I saw this very rare unit in Helena, MT and took a shot, but it wasn't a great one. I posted that one on my Flickr gallery that night and commented that I wished I'd been able to get a better shot. Ask and ye shall receive! Two days later - March 7th - it was in Livingston, MT and not only that but the train it helped over Bozeman Pass was kind enough to set it out right in front of me!

For the second time in a month a set of Big Macs - this time a trio of all BNSF units - were pulling a long string of empty coal hoppers out of storage on the semi-abandoned Helena branch. I read an article last month in Trains about the increased production in the Powder River Basin and I'm guessing that's why these cars are being removed from storage.
