While SD40s seemed to make up the bulk of the Canadian National units running on the L&N in the late 70s and early 80s, there were a few four-axle units as well. Here is one of only two GP35s CN owned sitting in the Knoxville, TN yard on a bright sunny day in October 1978.

On December 19, 1985 Dad shot O&W SD40-2s 9953 (to BCOL 746), 9955 (to BCOL 748) & 9951 (to BCOL 744, to DME 6200) with a southbound unit coal train at Coniston, Georgia. Note the Seaboard System hoppers just behind the power and in front of the OWTX green hoppers.

The power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

Illinois Central loved rebuilds and had unusual engines on their roster for most of their existence, such as GP28s and GP10s. Here, a GP10 works the yard at McComb, MS, shoving a string of cars down the tracks. Notice the Penn Central boxcar - PC was only four months old when Dad shot this one.

Cities Service Company bought Tennessee Copper in the 1960s and all of Tennessee Copper's ALCo switchers were relettered for CSC. CSC is, incidentally, the same company that, in 1965, began selling gasoline under the CITGO brand. This was, of course, before CITGO became a subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela S.A., the Venezuelan state-owned petroleum company.

Nebkota bought a trio of ex-Canadian National F9s in the late 1980s from VIA Rail. My dad and I found both F9As sitting just between Chadron and Crawford, NE in October 1996. Obviously there had been a minor mishap...

You can see Dad's shot of these units here --> www.flickr.com/photos/hunter1828/614774562/

Eventually, all three Fs would be sold by Nebkota to the Canadian Pacific, which has them in active duty on business trains.
