The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, near Arco Junction, TN in June 1976

In June and July of 1976 Dad's B&B crew was working at Morley, TN and on three occasions Dad got to ride along with the crew of the Clairfield Local in the afternoon after his work crew had finished for the day.

The Clairfield Local worked the Trevilion Branch, which was a joint L&N/Southern line from Morley, TN to Fonde, KY. L&N locals originated out of Lafollette or Morley while Southern locals originated out of Jellico, TN.

On June 8, 1976 Dad was riding along in the cab of L&N C420 1322 (ex-Monon 505) and took this shot as the units were switching the coal tipple at Anthras, TN.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Tate, GA in October 1975

Four L&N GP38-2s work a local at Tate, Georgia on Halloween day, 1975. This is the Old Line from Etowah, TN to Elizabeth, GA and this section at Tate is today operated by the Georgia Northeastern.

I've obviously not paid any attention to the shortline situation in Montana and North Dakota as I was very surprised to find that after my absence from the area of the Yellowstone Valley in eastern Montana/Western North Dakota that WATCO shortline Yellowstone Valley Railroad had taken over operations of former BNSF branch lines from Glendive to Snowden, MT and from Bainville to Plentywood, MT.

I caught GP30 3021 (still lettered for another WATCO line - Palouse River & Coulee City) with a northbound string of cars passing through Dore, ND on the way to Snowden, MT.

B&O SD50 8592 sits at the Etowah, TN engine facilities in January 1987. It's a few months past the CSX merger, but this unit, like many others, is unrepainted, unrenumbered and unpatched. The SD50s ordered by Chessie and Seaboard System had been numbered consecutively to begin with to facilitate the CSX merger.

These two always have a way of eluding me, not today. As soon as I got to Pine the gates were coming down, and a confused trucker almost got another one hit by a Amtrak, because of the way the gates are setup.
