Part four in my ongoing Diesel Cab series.

This is the cab of Montana Rail Link SDP40-2XR #290. This rare unit is ex-BN SDP40 9851/xx-BN 6395/nee-GN 321 and was rebuilt to Dash 2 specs by MRL after they acquired it in 1989.

On March 5, 2008 I saw this very rare unit in Helena, MT and took a shot, but it wasn't a great one. I posted that one on my Flickr gallery that night and commented that I wished I'd been able to get a better shot. Ask and ye shall receive! Two days later - March 7th - it was in Livingston, MT and not only that but the train it helped over Bozeman Pass was kind enough to set it out right in front of me!

In the early summer of 1971 Dad shot L&N RS3 155 working the Alcoa South Plant at Alcoa, TN. That old RS3 isn't the only cool thing in the shot. Check out that old New Haven box car right behind it!

For the second time in a month a set of Big Macs - this time a trio of all BNSF units - were pulling a long string of empty coal hoppers out of storage on the semi-abandoned Helena branch. I read an article last month in Trains about the increased production in the Powder River Basin and I'm guessing that's why these cars are being removed from storage.

How a surprise to see this electric engine of the 1200 serial, once of NS, Nederlanse Spoorwegen or Dutch Railways. She was active for NS from 1952 till 1998 for express trains on long distances.

Here she is just waiting in the Central station in Amsterdam while working for EETC, "Euro Express Train Charter". It is a self supporting railway transport company.

That means she is running on non scheduled charter trains from Amsterdam all over Europe , so to Inssbruck or to Lourdes and night charters all over Europe.

The engine wears the name of J.Hoekwater.

A rare ex-SCL BQ23-7 sits in a siding at Wetmore, TN (south of Etowah). The BQs were used on locals and branchlines for most of their life before being converted into b-units (by having the windows plated over and controls removed). A few of them actually made it into CSX paint but all are now long gone.
