Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, near East Glacier, MT May 1984
Late afternoon in late May of 1984 and the heavy clouds and snow on the peaks let us know that there is a fine line between Winter and Spring in the High Country of Montana. Amtrak F40PHs 333 & 317 pull hard to drag the westbound Empire Builder out of the Plains and into the Rockies as the train nears East Glacier, Montana.
Little did I realize in May of 1984 as we rode this train across Montana that almost exactly 20 years later I would move to Montana. Life's funny that way. :)

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Eton, GA sometime in the early Fall of 1972
Sometime in the early Fall of 1972 Dad shot this southbound fast freight at Eton, Georgia. On point is L&N SD40 1255 (to SBD 1255, to SBD 8331, to EMDX 6503) trailed by what appears to be 3 U25Cs. The photo was originally shot on an old box-style camera, then Dad later had a 35mm slide reproduced of the shot. Despite the shot being a bit blurry, several things really make this a great shot - the green flag flying above the window and the early phase L&N paint, with the "L&N" on the long hood near the rear.
