Sometime in Early 2000, I caught unpatched SP GP35R 6354 (ex-SP GP35 6608, nee-SP 7711, to DMVW 6354), along with patched but unrepainted DMVW GP35R 6315 (ex-SP 6315, nee-SP GP35 7744) & DMVW GP35R 6306 (ex-SP 6306, xx-SP GP35 6569, nee-SP 7457) working the small SOO Line yard at Max, North Dakota.

Seven years later, I would shoot 6354 & 6306 again, only this time wearing DMVW colors.

Oakley neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. You can't see much of it in this shot, but this is Canadian Pacific (CP) 5678 which is an EMD SD40-2 locomotive built in 1974 with serial number A3123.

These days, it is difficult to get near trains in train yards. This one was sitting on some tracks near where I live. Since the CP doesn't operate anywhere around here, I'm assuming that the engine was sold or leased to a company that operates locally like the Indiana and Ohio RR that has a yard near here.

If you do a Google search of CP #5678, you can find several photos of this engine in it's heyday when it's paint was fresh and beautiful.

The power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

And you thought Baldwin made pianos :-)

This 1946 Diesel was just one of over 70,500 locomotives made by the Baldwin Locomotive Company and its successors. The best company in steam locomotives got burned by not switching to diesel soon enough.

The Mississippi Historical Marker states:

"Baldwin Locomotive No. 601

Built in 1946 as the first Road Switcher of its type in U.S. Columbus and Greenville Railway's first diesel powered locomotive. Retired in 1984 after 38 years on freight and passenger trains"

This engine is parked in front of the beautiful old red brick entrance to the old maintenance shop of the Columbus and Greenville Railway. Note that the maintenance shop significantly predates the engine as the shop entrance is too small for the engine - we are talking OLD.

- Started by a jewler/siversmith, the first Baldwin locomotive was completed on November 23, 1832 and production ceased in 1956 after more than 70,500 locomotives had been produced. Baldwin is a revered name for train fans.
