ET&WNC RS3 210 (ex-Central of Georgia 109) at Johnson City, TN in July of 1980. The engine still mostly wears the CofG paint, with the white stripe being painted red as the only difference.

The East Tennessee & Western North Carolina began operation in the mountains of its namesake area in 1866. Originally a narrow gauge line, it hauled iron ore, passengers and other things. In 1950 the narrow gauge was abandoned and the line converted fully to standard gauge.

The railroad gained the nickname "Tweetsie" for the sound of the shrill steam whistles in the early days of operation. Today, a short 3-mile tourist line operates in North Carolina over an abandoned portion of the route with ET&WNC steam engine #12 as primary power.

The line ceased operations in 1985 but was acquired by another company and renamed the East Tennessee Railway. The ET still operates in the Johnson City area today primarily as a switching service for CSX and Norfolk Southern

In June 1981 we took a train trip through Mexico. We went from Mexicali down to Benjamin Hill, on south down the coast to a point I don't remember, then northeast through the Copper Canyon to Chihuahua, and then north to Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, TX. I'm not sure, but I think this was the train we took south from Mexicali, led by Sonora-Baja California high nose GP40-2 2105. S-BC was absorbed into NdeM, and you can see the beginning of that here in the NdeM paint on an S-BC unit.

The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, in South Louisville, KY August 1971

The "South Wind" was a venerable passenger train dating to the 1930s. It originated in Chicago and was operated from there to Louisville, Kentucky over the Pennsylvania Railroad. At Louisville the train made its way onto Louisville & Nashville tracks to continue south to Montgomery, AL. In Montgomery it switched over to Atlantic Coast Line rails for the run to Jacksonville, FL. In Jacksonville the train finally switched over to Florida East Coast tracks for the final run down the coast to Miami. Most things I can find about the train indicate that it often ran south all the way to Miami with Pennsylvania E units and the respective northbound counterpart often ran all the way to Chicago with ACL or FEC units. Though L&N crews operated the train from Louisville to Montgomery, they were often driving foreign power. L&N Es were usually only used if the PRR, ACL or FEC units failed.

Here, in August 1971, a few months after the formation of Amtrak, Dad caught the "South Wind", now an Amtrak operation, on its way out of Louisville with two L&N Es on the front. In the first few months, before Amtrak bought their own power (used or new) they used power provided by other railroads. Not long after this shot was taken the trains old and classic name would be changed by Amtrak to the "Floridian". Sadly, the train was cancelled completely in 1979.
