UP SD70Ms 4536, 4650 & 4154 have recently arrived at Silver Bow, Montana on December 30, 2013. They are in the process of breaking up their train. Once that's done, they'll build a new train and head back south by around 3 or 4 PM.

Cities Service Company bought Tennessee Copper in the 1960s and all of Tennessee Copper's ALCo switchers were relettered for CSC. CSC is, incidentally, the same company that, in 1965, began selling gasoline under the CITGO brand. This was, of course, before CITGO became a subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela S.A., the Venezuelan state-owned petroleum company.

In August 1971 Dad shot CSC SW1500 with a loaded ore train in Copperhill, TN. Notice the barren, desert-like landscape of the Copper Basin of southeast Tennessee, completely denuded of foliage by decades of poor mining practices. The Basin is in the process of trying to reclaim and save the damaged land. Oddly enough, a 40-acre plot of the Mars-like terrain has been set aside to be preserved as it is.

From the back of the card:

"Southern Pacific #4002 is a rare Alco RS-32 (DL-721), built in 1962, and one of only ten such units in the west. Shown at Millbrae, California, the unit was #7302 prior to Espee's renumbering. New York Central's twenty-five of these 2,000 h.p. units were the only other examples of this model that Alco built.

Four Southern Pacific C628s on lease to the Louisville & Nashville pulling a southbound L&N unit coal train. The train is crossing bridge #72 near Ilford, TN. Dad tells me that this bridge has a reputation as a bad luck bridge among both train crews and bridge crews as four different derailments have happened on it, including one in which a derailed car was dragged across the entire length of the bridge.
