Yellow Mountain - Huangshan China

The Shtangeyev trail in the Yalta Nature Reserve is one of the most popular hiking routes in the Crimean Mountains. It starts near the Uchan-Su Waterfall and goes to the top of Stavri-Kaya Mountain. The Shtangeev trail is named after the famous doctor Fyodor Shtangeyev from Yalta. He was engaged in the treatment of tuberculosis and other lung diseases. Shtangeyev, as well as Sergey Botkin, paid much attention to the study of the beneficial effects of the climate of the Southern Coast of Crimea on human health. In these places, the phytoncides of the coniferous forest are mixed with the sea breeze, which creates a positive effect for the treatment of lung diseases. The Shtangeyev trail was created in 1899. The trail passes at the foot of a rocky mountain range. In one place it is literally cut through the vertical slope of the mountain. The views of the Crimean Mountains of the Yalta Reserve, which open from the Shtangeyev trail, are more picturesque than on the Botkin trail.

Famous cattle trail debuts in print

In its edition for this day in 1870, the Kansas Daily Commonwealth made the earliest known printed reference to the Chisholm Trail, the major livestock route out of Texas. Cattle drovers followed the old Shawnee Trail by way of San Antonio, Austin, and Waco, where the trails split. The Chisholm Trail continued on to Fort Worth, then passed east of Decatur to the crossing at Red River Station. It followed the same route as modern U.S. Highway 81 from Fort Worth to Newton, Kansas. Although the Chisholm Trail was used only from 1867 to 1884, the longhorn cattle driven north along it provided a steady source of income that helped the impoverished state recover from the Civil War.

Texas is celebrating the 150th anniversary of The Chisholm trail this year.

The Appalachian Trail is the world's longest hiking-only footpath, spanning approximately 2,190 miles. It runs from Georgia to Maine in the Eastern US, although there are now international extensions to the trail. There is enough info about it in Wikipedia to fill a book, so this is to commemorate three Thru-hikers. Thru-hikers are a special breed, able and determined to complete the A.T. in one year.

The first Appalachian Trail thru-hiker was 29 year-old Earl Shaffer, a World War II veteran who hiked the entire trail in 1948. His purpose was to "walk the Army out of his system" after enduring heavy combat and the loss of his best friend during the war. Prior hikers had only completed the trail one section at a time over several years, so thru-hiking was a different concept. Shaffer brought new purpose and a hiking challenge to the trail.

The second thru-hiker was 24 year-old Gene Espy, also a WWII veteran. In late May of 1951, Espy and a friend set out from Georgia, but the friend lasted only one day. 123 days later, Espy arrived at the top of Mt. Katahdin, Maine. He had no idea that he was the trail's second thru-hiker and was astonished when he arrived back home to fanfare. He is also listed as the first northbound hiker to meet a southbound hiker en route. Espy died just last month (August 2025) at the age of 97.

Perhaps the most astounding story is that of Grandma Gatewood, the first woman to thru-hike and to do it alone. Emma Gatewood walked the entire A.T. three times, the first at age 67. She had given birth to 11 children, was the survivor of domestic violence including broken bones and teeth, pursued and received a divorce with alimony in the 1930s - a rare feat for a woman. She is also credited with the invention of "ultra-light hiking," carrying only a few bits of clothes, a little food, and a piece of plastic for a raincoat in a cloth bag. Foraging for nuts and berries along the way, she accepted meals from other hikers. Gatewood's first hike was in a pair of Ked sneakers after telling her daughters that she was going for a walk.

What strikes me about these three individuals is the violence they endured and the physical need to walk away in the solace of Nature. Each seemed driven to seek a solitary healing. To just stop thinking and walk. And by doing so, these "ordinary people" accomplished the extraordinary.

Autumn has hit the mountain. The colors are turning quickly up there. We saw many yummy blueberries alongside the trail.
