Barr Lake State Park, Colorado

After visiting the interesting little town of Southwell i returned to Edingley via the Southwell trail, the line of a disused railway. I have to admit that after a mile or two i find these tracks a tad tedious.

To busy today to get out in the daylight, so headed up to the moors at night to find some snow and light trails.

The Botkin Trail in the Yalta Nature Reserve is one of the most famous hiking trails in the Crimean Mountains. Its length from Kirov Street to the top of Stavri-Kay aMount is 4.5 kilometers.

The Botkin Trail route was created in 1901 for tuberculosis patients. They could take wellness walks here, so it is also called the "Health Trail". In these places, the phytoncides of the coniferous forest are mixed with the sea breeze, which creates a positive effect for the treatment of lung diseases.

Professor Sergey Botkin was one of the most famous physicians in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. He received the title of academician and the position of physician of the royal family. Since 1870, he has been studying the climate of the Southern coast of Crimea and made a huge contribution to the popularization of recreation and the development of sanatoriums in the Crimea. He was the first to note the healing properties of the air on the Southern coast of Crimea for the treatment of lung diseases.

The Mount Pisgah Trail is a slightly challenging climb to the second highest peak in the Blue Ridge. WLOS's transmission tower is at the peak and a vieawing platform allows for magnificent views.

Sometimes I get these great ideas, or what I think they are great ideas anyway. The plan was to come up to this part of the Shasta wilderness and connect with a specific lake, hopefully to get some cool reflections and views of Shasta in the snow! Well as some of you might know that spend time in the snow... what happens to lakes when it's cold and snowy outside is that they freeze over, and get covered with snow. Sometimes this is interesting, but in this case, the lakes just looked like vast flat expanses of snow. However, climbing up high, we were able to get above a fog layer hanging over the city that night, and the milky way stretched over the city of Shasta horizontally illuminated well because the light pollution from the city was masked by the fog layer. I took two exposures, one long to smooth out the fog, and capture the foreground details, and another short to capture the sharp stars. During the process I realized that letting the star trails bleed through a little bit made for a more interesting photograph.

Withlacoochee State Forest, Citrus County, Fl (Citrus loop "A" trail)

The area is a paradise for hikers, offering a variety of trails for different skill levels and interests. One of the most popular hiking trails in Landmannalaugar is the Laugavegur Trail. This 55-kilometer trail takes hikers through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Iceland, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. The trail offers a diverse range of landscapes, including colorful mountains, vast lava fields, glacial rivers, and even the possibility of encountering snowfields and glaciers. The trail typically takes around four to six days to complete, with huts and campsites available for overnight stays.

Another popular hiking option is the shorter and less challenging hike to Mount Bláhnjúkur. This 3-4 hour hike takes you to the top of a volcanic mountain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The trail is marked by colorful markers, making it easy to follow, and the reward at the top is truly worth the effort.

Star Trails over Messaria in the island of Andros, Greece. Lights from nearby Vilagges do not help but ...

On my way home from work I stopped my car near the street and tried shooting light trails for the first time because I had my cam with me by chance. I am satisfied with the result. Especially because it was the first photo of this kind for me.

The Appalachian Trail is the world's longest hiking-only footpath, spanning approximately 2,190 miles. It runs from Georgia to Maine in the Eastern US, although there are now international extensions to the trail. There is enough info about it in Wikipedia to fill a book, so this is to commemorate three Thru-hikers. Thru-hikers are a special breed, able and determined to complete the A.T. in one year.

The first Appalachian Trail thru-hiker was 29 year-old Earl Shaffer, a World War II veteran who hiked the entire trail in 1948. His purpose was to "walk the Army out of his system" after enduring heavy combat and the loss of his best friend during the war. Prior hikers had only completed the trail one section at a time over several years, so thru-hiking was a different concept. Shaffer brought new purpose and a hiking challenge to the trail.

The second thru-hiker was 24 year-old Gene Espy, also a WWII veteran. In late May of 1951, Espy and a friend set out from Georgia, but the friend lasted only one day. 123 days later, Espy arrived at the top of Mt. Katahdin, Maine. He had no idea that he was the trail's second thru-hiker and was astonished when he arrived back home to fanfare. He is also listed as the first northbound hiker to meet a southbound hiker en route. Espy died just last month (August 2025) at the age of 97.

Perhaps the most astounding story is that of Grandma Gatewood, the first woman to thru-hike and to do it alone. Emma Gatewood walked the entire A.T. three times, the first at age 67. She had given birth to 11 children, was the survivor of domestic violence including broken bones and teeth, pursued and received a divorce with alimony in the 1930s - a rare feat for a woman. She is also credited with the invention of "ultra-light hiking," carrying only a few bits of clothes, a little food, and a piece of plastic for a raincoat in a cloth bag. Foraging for nuts and berries along the way, she accepted meals from other hikers. Gatewood's first hike was in a pair of Ked sneakers after telling her daughters that she was going for a walk.

What strikes me about these three individuals is the violence they endured and the physical need to walk away in the solace of Nature. Each seemed driven to seek a solitary healing. To just stop thinking and walk. And by doing so, these "ordinary people" accomplished the extraordinary.

River Gorge Trail

This 3.5km trail offers magnificent views of the Trent River gorge from the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge, before continuing downstream past the old Ferris Quarry and onto the legendary “sheep wash”, now a picnic area. The trail continues south, following the river’s edge for more fantastic views of the Trent River.

Super event in trail running season that I was happy to participate in. Track was very hard but the view is very rewarding.

Devil's Tower trail. Wyoming

The Apache Trail to Canyon Lake, was my chosen annual birthday ride. I wanted an epic ride to mark the special occasion.

Sure it was trailing...but having never seen this one of a kind unit before I did my best to capture a clean roster shot here since this was a rather cool bonus. Iowa Interstate ES44AC 516 was blt. Dec. 2014 as part of the regional's third order of modern GE road power. It was specially painted in this Rock Island style red and yellow scheme as part of the IAIS' 30th anniversary celebrations.

It is seen here switching across South Sixth Street adjacent to the historic Rock Island depot.
