walking through urmston meadows i stumbled across these old tracks. odd because they literally run the length of this photo! i have played with the contrast a lot as it was a pretty dull photo to begin with (again because of the rubbish mancunian skies) and as a result, i really like it!

These cabinets by the lineside contain lubricant that's used to reduce flange wear on the wheels of trains that pass over them.

This odd railcar is the DOTX219, which computes track geometry parameters at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, according to atip.fra.dot.gov/public/about/DOTX_219.pdf. Ye gads. We spotted it yesterday above Interstate 20 east of Birmingham, AL. It wasn't being pulled at 125 mph, but it was moving right along.
