Building tracks for the First Hill Streetcar continued this week on South Jackson Street in front of Union Station. The City of Seattle is managing the design, construction and operation of the streetcar, using funds from Sound Transit. When trains are running, scheduled for fall 2014, passengers can ride from Pioneer Square to Capitol Hill via the International District and First Hill neighborhoods.

Looking east, this is where a dual-set of signals once stood. These ones were presumably faced west for coming eastbounds, probably for warrants over the Fox River bridge.

For the All New Scavenger Hunt #12 - Railroad tracks.
These run about a quarter mile from my house. The trains sound their whistles at two cross streets, but I seldom notice them!
Below is a crop of the railroad car on the siding which I am posting without comment.
An expedition to DOWMAC at Quedgeley to recover concrete sleepered track panels, a major coup for the railway that needed to relay all of its track.
Summer 1984.
Fresh Mink tracks along Red Butte creek. My first tracking experience was with a mink 17 years ago. late one night my friends had dropped me off at home, but I was wide awake and not ready to go to bed,so I toke a little walk down to the creek in the nearby gully. It was snowing and a very peaceful night. On the way down into the gully I saw deer and a Great Horned Owl,which were quite surprised and not expecting to see a human. As I made my way to the creek I noticed it was frozen over, and there were fresh tracks in the snow that had just fallen on the ice. I had checked out some books on tracking from the library, and they looked like photos of Mink tracks I had seen. I followed them a short distance, and they went into a little shelter in some rocks, and didn't come out,and I knew that meant the mink was right inside there. I got a short stick and poked it in there hoping to scare out the mink, but instead I just smelled a strong musky odor similar to skunk(all members of the weasel family have musk glands and emit a strong odor when confronted, although most can't spray it). Since I couldn't get the mink to come out,I went home and went to bed,but at first light I was back, but there was a fresh trail of tracks leading out of the shelter and upstream under an impassable barrier. To put this into perspective, i have only seen 2 mink since then, one at about 100 yards in the snow, and the other one my wolfdog got into a fight with in the marsh one day(it didn't get hurt, but my dog was much worse for the wear afterward),and I haven't sen one in over a decade. Beginners luck I guess.
