The downpour in Hawley fortuitously stopped when I reached D&H Canal Park at Lock 31 a couple miles outside of town. US-6 roughly follows the remnants of the Delaware and Hudson Canal between Carbondale and Hawley. Lock 31 is one of the better preserved sections of the D&H since it was abandoned in the early 20th century.

The sun sets behind the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon, from a deserted towpath next to some ruined buildings.
One of a Monochrome series showing the Towpaths of the Trent Mersey Canal, Staffordshire at Etruria and Middleport ~ The Trent & Mersey Canal, engineered by James Brindley, was the country’s first long-distance canal. It is full of interesting features, which reflect its history. These include Harecastle Tunnel, the lengthy lock flight known as ‘Heartbreak Hill’, and the traditional canal town of Shardlow. The towpath creates a green corridor through Stoke-on-Trent, as well as offering a cycling and walking route through rural Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.
