Ellingen

Horsehill Tor, a hill at the western end of Edale. The zigzag paths on the hill are likely old 'sledways' which were used when bringing peat down to the valley which was cut on the high moorland. This practice occured until the railway was brought through the valley when coal became the preferred source of fuel.

All about the light... and shadow.

The tower of St.Michael's is all that remains of the second Church dedicated to St. Michael, on the top of Glastonbury Tor. An earlier C11th timber church was destroyed by an earthquake on 11th. September 1275. The second St Michael's Church was built in the C14th by Abbot Adam of Sodbury, incorporating the foundations of the previous building. Its likely that the Monastery of St Michael on the Tor was a daughter house of Glastonbury Abbey. This Church survived until Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 when it was demolished, although for some reason the tower was left standing. Glastonbury Tor stands 158m above the surrounding Somerset Levels. Archeological excavations in 1892 revealed evidence of human occupation of the site going back at least 5,000 years. The Tor features prominently in the mythology of King Arthur. Taken with a 1981 Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera Supercolor Autofocus on Polaroid (TIP) film. 'RoidWeek Autumn 2022 Day 3,Photo 1.

On Thursday morning, I was standing in the cold, wind and hill fog, thinking "What am I doing?"

Shortly after, the fog started to lift and the light broke through and I was happy.

The best of the sunset colour on Friday afternoon.

I've not shot this composition before. It's great how new opportunities arise with a snowfall.

I liked the camera's auto white balance (previous shot). But changed it for this one.

A spectacular sunrise on Derwent Edge this morning. For a moment or two anyway.

A break in the cloud puts Vixen Tor in the spotlight. Thanks for looking – Mk.

Friday the morning on Upper Tor, Kinder Scout. There was a little colour on the way up but sunrise was muted with low cloud. The light took a while to break through.

The much photographed gritstone tor at Over Owler Tor near Hathersage.

The lack of cloud was a bit of a disappointment on Thursday so I returned to Higger Tor this morning.

I had a prime lens in the bag so I thought I might as well get a sunstar shot.

Another from Saturday's last minute detour to Higger Tor. I think this shows how much fog there was in Hope Valley.

Icicles hanging off the ice-glazed gritstone of Higger Tor.

Yesterday I made a very quick trip up to Dartmoor before work. I saw on Facebook that two of the Royal Navy Sea King helicopters were doing a flypast over Devon and Cornwall as part of their retirement celebrations. They were due to fly over Burrator Reservoir just before 1pm so I drove up and walked over to Leather Tor which turned out to be the perfect spot to see them.

The sky was very stormy and moody yesterday although there were a few pockets of light hitting the landscape. So, while I was waiting for the helicopters to arrive I took a few shots of the area and I managed to catch a lovely bit of light hitting the woodland down the hill from the tor.

I was so wrapped up in looking for new compositions while I was there that I nearly missed the helicopters, as they arrived 20 minutes early!! I had to quickly rush and get my zoom lens on and only ended up with a couple of photos of them, but it was still nice to see them fly by.

As much as I appreciated comments and feedback I would request no Awards or flashy gif comments, please. They will be deleted. Thank you.

One of my takes from a weekend trip out to Rough Tor on Bodmin Moor, lots to see in the surrounding area too which is always a bonus plus lots of information/history to read about, a worthwhile visit as there were some nice moody sky's coming and going which always holds my interest and is my favourite weather for Moorland Photography, hoping to return again soon so I can visit Brown Willy and experience some Moor of Bodmin's delights.

A photo from Saturday morning. I always struggle for foreground on the Western side of Higger Tor. I'd initially tried Curbar Edge which was in the fog so, with a short time left before sunrise, I headed here.

There wasn't much above the fog. Mam Tor on the right horizon was in an out of hill fog.

There's some compositional issues with this shot but I thought it was worth sharing.

A group of large gritsone tors on Birchen Edge catching the sunrise light. Known as the Three Ships, they are named after Lord Nelson's ships. In this photo they are from right to left ; 'Victory', 'Defiance' and 'Royal Soverin'.
