Snow on Mam Tor.... from the slopes of Lose Hill .. yes the weather did get a lot worse !! late Apri 2016
Lovely views (439 m.a.s.l.) into Dartmoor from the top of Easdon Tor, one of the lesser known and quiet tors of Dartmoor.
Wadi Rum (Arabic: وادي رم) also known as The Valley of the Moon (Arabic: وادي القمر) is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan.[1] The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning 'high' or 'elevated'.[2] To reflect its proper Arabic pronunciation, archaeologists transcribe it as Wadi Ramm

One of the few tors we came across during our Dartmoor hike last weekend. We decided to have our picnic up there but soon realised that the area was busy with swarms of garden chafers. The beetles were incredibly confrontational and also started nibbling on anything they landed on, including our skin!
We cut the picnic short and had another one at Buckland-in-the-Moor ;-)

On the last day of my holiday ('staycation') I wanted to do one final walk on Dartmoor. We choose a lovely short walk around Birch Tor as our trip for the day. Once passing Bennett's cross the patch led us up through heather-covered moorland with grazing Dartmoor ponies and the odd lizard on our way. The view from the photo was from the first granite outcrops after reaching Birch Tor. The smell of heather blossom, the sound of buzzing bees and the good weather were fantastic. We had a lovely picnic next to that spot with 4 Dartmoor ponies as our only companions. The path then led us down the hill again to reach the disused Vitifer and Birch Tor tin mines. This short walk has really a lot to offer and I can highly recommend it!
One of the smaller outcrops at the foot of Hound Tor. There is a sheer endless amount of motifs presented by the granite. Quite popular for rock climbing/bouldering too!
Sharp Tor panorama on Dartmoor. A fine day towards the end of May provided clear air for photography. This is a merged panorama from five portrait orientation shots taken at this gateway.
From our day out visiting historic sites on Dartmoor. From the Bronze Age settlement Grimspound we walked up the hill to Hookney Tor which is a nice viewpoint for the circular stonewall surrounding Grimspound. It was one of the rare sunny days during the holidays so we were happy to make most of the good weather! Blue skies don't add much interest to a landscape so I played around with placing the sun just behind the granite outcrops to create a nice sunburst.
This was taken from Combestone Tor, which is in the centre of Dartmoor, half way between Hexworthy and the Venford Reservoir. It is virtually on the edge of the road, and is the most accessible of all the Dartmoor Tors. 1,168 feet above sea level, there are beautiful views of the valley of the River Dart, with Dartmeet and the remains of its clapper bridge about a mile away across country. For further information please see www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/combe_stone.htm.
It was a glorious April weekend in the South West of the UK and we picked one of the last remaining walks from our Dartmoor hiking guide - Dr Blackall's Drive. Dr Blackall was the Sheriff of Exeter in the late 19th century but he also owned a manor on Dartmoor. This Dart valley landscape is very beautiful so he had a carriage way built where he could enjoy the views - and now we can follow this old carriage way and immerse in the scenery ourselves! This was from the start of the walk at the top of Mel Tor with glorious views towards Venford reservoir and the Dart valley below.
This pile o' granite sits 466 m above sea level, in a remote part of Northern Dartmoor. There's some interesting rock formations and shapes to be explored, we used the wind-sheltered side of the tor as our picnic spot for the day, warm tea and coffee included! It was actually hard to chew any food, my mouth felt completely frozen shut!

Not be long now. One from 2017 that I never processed.
From our hike last Saturday, windy and sunny on the hills surrounding Belstone, in the north of Dartmoor National Park. There are some signs that granite has been extracted here in the past, the split boulder in the foreground has a row of holes in it, lining the split, possibly to create this break line. A wonderful remote area, only the Dartmoor ponies were all gone....maybe too windy for them?!
Das Deutsche Tor wurde um 1230 als von zwei schlanken Rundtürmen mit Kegeldächern bewachter Durchgang erbaut und war Teil der Stadtmauer
The German Gate was built around 1230 as a passageway guarded by two slender round towers with conical roofs and was part of the city wall
Another shot from Sunday evening's trip to Leather Tor on Dartmoor.
Despite this being one of the most accessible tors on the moor I really don't visit it enough. I think once all this lockdown is over I'll do my best to make a few more visits.
I hope you're all keeping safe and well?

A reprocess of an old image. Just fixed the chromatic aberration and changed the white balance to daylight.
One of the best sunrises I've seen with some gentle mist in Burbage Valley.

Yesterday didn't quite go to plan. More storm than light. Quite brutal at times with wind, rain and hail. I did catch a few rainbows including a faint one here.
Realised I've only ever posted one photo form Parson's Tor even though I've been many times. The light was quite nice at this time, if a little weak.
The first waypoint of last Saturday's War Horse Walk was Gutter Tor, a short ascent from the layby. The views were already superb from up there and walking a short distance to an old triangulation point, the views were simply stunning with Plymouth and the sea clearly visible. I especially liked the split rock in that frame.
"Recortes" is an incredibly dangerous tradition of non-violent dodging where local people ("recortadores") compete at dodging completely unrestrained fighting bulls for the ultimate adrenaline rush. The barehanded, unprotected participants are all the time on the verge or being gored or rammed by the bulls, which aren't physically hurt at all.
"Recortes" es una tradición increiblemente peligrosa donde las gentes de una localidad ("recortadores") compiten en esquivar de forma no violenta a toros bravos sueltos. Los participantes, a manos limpias y sin protección alguna, están contínuamente a punto de ser corneados o embestidos por los toros, los cuales no reciben daño físico alguno.
From our circular walk from Hound Tor to Hayne Down and Bowerman's Nose. You gotta love those granite outcrops!
