Once the sun was properly up and the mist and cloud began to burn off and roll away some lovely, golden light slowly, briefly took charge.

Thursday Door Day

The good thing about our photography club closing down over summer is that it’s allowed us to run weekly photo-walks which forces you to get out and take some pictures! Here’s another view from Killmar Tor from one of the recent walks; a great location that we didn’t have enough time to explore before the rain arrived!

Glastonbury Tor is a tor near Glastonbury in the English county of Somerset, topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower, a Grade I listed building. The site is managed by the National Trust and has been designated a scheduled monument. Wikipedia

Another shot from my visit to Pew Tor on Sunday morning. This was taken just before we decided to pack up and head to Princetown for breakfast. There was still a lot of cloud and fog but I did manage to get some detail out of the cloud instead of pure whiteness. The tor itself is quite popular as it's easy to get to but we had it to ourselves all morning. The views from here are quite impressive though, you can see Ingra Tor, Kings Tor, Swell Tor Quarry, Great Staple Tor and Brentor church amongst other sights.

Clearing hill fog on Over Owler Tor.

I drove out over the tops so I could check the hills and valleys for fog. The fog was localised to the hill tops, so I chose Over Owler Tor as a destination. After spending a little time in fog at the top, I dropped down and waited for the sun to break through as the fog dispersed. It was magical to see but over far too quickly.

One of the town gates in Neubrandenburg, Germany. The gate is made up of two tower buildings, this is the for-gate and the main gate can be seen through the opening. That building is dated by dendrochronology to 1311 (that is, the building includes wood from trees which were taken down in that year). The style is the, for the Middle Ages in this part of Europe; typical Brick Gothic (Backsteingotik).

And the name? Tor is just German for gate, and Stargarder is to indicate that it was the gate towards the town Stargard (today known as Burg Stargard).

The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II after the temporary restoration of order during the Batavian Revolution. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which used to be the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered not only as a symbol of the tumultuous histories of Germany and Europe, but also of European unity and peace.

It was looking like Friday morning was the best chance of sunlight for a while, so I set my alarn for 5:30am and headed to Edale.

A pleasure to bump to Nicholas Butt in the village. Nick didn't have time to head up here but it was nice to have a chat (in between trying to breathe) on the way up to The Nab. I arrived up here minutes before sunrise but had to wait a little while for the sun to break through the cloud.

I thought I'd try something different along with the compositions I always re-shoot. This round boulder caught my eye and I managed to balance the right hand side. Not easy with the wind.

The mountain forecast changed late on last night with above 600m being clear of cloud. With a little snow forecast, I headed back to Upper Tor. The weather gave me a battering. It's not a shot I'd usually try for, but the light in the valley was nice.

Standing at 1765 ft, Back tor is the highest spot along Derwent edge from here we can see many of the unsual Gritstone tors which have been formed by the actions of wind rain and frost over many centuries. From left to right we can pick out The wheel stones, The cakes of bread, Dovestones tor and The salt cellar.

Yesterday I took the dog for a walk up to Great Mis tor on Dartmoor. It was supposed to rain all day but despite being windy as hell it was actually a really nice trip out.

I wasn't up there long, I got a couple of shots off but as the MOD were firing in the range I couldn't walk any further, but the dog and I still had a nice wander and it was good to get out in the fresh air.

This shot is taken from the back of the tor and I don't really know what this little shed is for, but I've seen a few photos of it in the past so thought I'd get a shot myself.

This shot was taken from Combestone Tor, which is in the centre of Dartmoor, half way between Hexworthy and Venford Reservoir. It is virtually on the edge of the road, and is the most accessible of all the Dartmoor Tors. There are beautiful views of the valley of the River Dart, with Dartmeet and the remains of its clapper bridge about a mile away to the left of the picture

These outcrops, like the many tors found throughout Dartmoor National Park, are formed through freeze-thaw action over the course of millions of years. Before the Ice Age, when the surrounding land was fertile and covered with trees, water would seep into the bedrock and clean the dirt from above it, exposing it to the elements. When a cooler climate took over and the temperature would rapidly vary over the course of the day, the exposed rock was eroded by the water within it being frozen (and hence expanded) and unfrozen repeatedly.

Combestone Tor is the park’s prime example of such weathering that occurred to most of the land in the area, with much of the process showed in various stages across the rocky face.

Probably the gritstone tor I've taken most photographs of! Over Owler Tor on Hathersage Moor.

Photographically, Christmas day was looking like the best of the weather forecast. So I delayed Christmas dinner and headed to Whinstone Lee Tor. It doesn't take ling to walk up to here, and during that time there was some lovely light. But, just as I was on the final stretch, the sun dropped into cloud. After that, I only had a few moments of light then I waited for over an hour in the wind before heading back down, glad I'd captured something at least.

Going back to August and some nice, early light hitting the gritstone of Over Owler Tor.

Having a play with some older images today, this is another one from my trip up to Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor when we had a bit of snow.

This winter has been very disappointing for me so far, I've been hoping for more snow up on Dartmoor so I can get some photos for next winter's edition of Dartmoor Magazine, which I've been asked to be a featured photographer for. So far all we've had this year is high winds, grey skies and rain. I missed the best of the snow as I was down in Cornwall so haven't really had a chance to get out. Fingers crossed Jack Frost will eventually turn up in February and give us a couple of weeks of nice cold winter weather.

Anyway, I'll stop moaning about our climate, Here's another view from the tor with a slightly different composition than the last couple of shots I posted.

The top of High Tor is definitely not for the faint hearted with some pretty vertiginous views on hand

Not an easy shot to take or process, but I thought it was worth a go.

Just as the sun broke the horizon a bank of low cloud came over, the views were gone shortly after taking this shot.

I eventually got some light this morning. I was at Ringing Roger for sunrise but low cloud rose up and snuffed it out.

After hanging around in the wind for a while, I carried on to Upper Tor and arrived just as the cloud started to disperse and I got a few moments of light..

I was up there again yesterday for sunrise, unfortunately the sun didn't make an appearance.

My first and last opportunity to capture the recent snowfall. I've got a few shots to share. This is one of the last. I was lucky to get some fresh snow while I was there. The Wheel Stones on the left were appearing and disappearing in the rolling hill fog.

I was hoping for some direct light and colour, but really happy with the conditions.

Beautiful Phoebe pushing her way through the clouds!!! Good girl.

Epic sunlight illuminates this classic composition of Staple Tor for my first landscape shoot of December 2014. I’m hoping that this is a sign of things to come for the rest of the winter season. Thanks for looking – Mk.
