Great Staple Tor

Another shot from a morning at Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor a few weeks ago.

I was hoping for a bit more high cloud in the sky to give off those lovely pink colours, but as the weather report lied to me we ended up with just a few bits hanging around.

I get a lot of people asking me who placed the rocks like this, and without boring everyone with a science lesson, I've found a great fact sheet with the whole process of how they were formed. You can find it here...

Cat Tor at the southern end of Gardoms Edge...now 'decorated' with graffiti...

One from a lovely hike a couple of weeks back - a favourite of ours starting from Meldon reservoir in the north west of Dartmoor to reach Black Tor and Black-a-tor-copse. The views from up there are far reaching and lovely and the granite landscape served as a welcome scenery for our picnic!

Tony and I wandered up Saddle Tor this morning, quite late by our standards but it was only a recce really. Anyway, the views and the play of light and shade as the clouds passed overhead were too much to resist, so we didn't!

Der Aufgang zur Burg Rieneck

Burg und Ort waren mir noch aus meiner Pfadfinderzeit ein Begriff und letzten Sommer war ich endlich mal dort.

The tower (23 meters high) is the only remnant of Koudekerke, a village on Schouwen-Duiveland that has since disappeared in the Oosterschelde. The tower is just inside the dike and in the dike profile.

a shot from a very enjoyable couple of hours up at Yar Tor on Dartmoor last night

The description for our hike last Sunday promised some of the most stunning views over Dartmoor from the top of Bench Tor. As you can see from my photo it was misty and drizzling as we arrived at the top so no spectacular views for us this time. We had a blast anyhow and will return for sure!

Passauer Tor auch Allerheiligentor genannt in Schärding, OÖ

Higger Tor from Carl Wark peak district

This was taken from Combestone Tor, which is in the centre of Dartmoor, half way between Hexworthy and Venford Reservoir. It is virtually on the edge of the road, and is the most accessible of all the Dartmoor Tors. There are beautiful views of the valley of the River Dart, with Dartmeet and the remains of its clapper bridge about a mile away across country.

90 Second Exposure of Mam Tor at dusk

1st shot of the day. It was fresh to say the least walking to the top of Mam Tor. Glad I had all my layers on!! So peaceful and quiet just Skylarks song on the air and the sound of the wind gently blowing over my ears... (Gentle as in force gale winds) Isn't it great to be alive!! ;-)

Once the sun was properly up and the mist and cloud began to burn off and roll away some lovely, golden light slowly, briefly took charge.

As I was showing Neil around Dartmoor yesterday we ventured up to Rippon Tor first as I'd never walked up it before.

As I was walking up I saw a rainbow slowly moving across the moor and I raced like hell to the top to find a composition. I was a little too late to catch the full rainbow, so I quickly put my 70-200mm lens on and caught the remainder of it as it hit Hound Tor. It's not as sharp as I'd like as it was blowing a hooley up there and I was in a bit of a rush.

We saw a fair few rainbows yesterday and I caught two of them but didn't get a shot of a full one, just partial bits, but it was a fun day of photography

The good thing about our photography club closing down over summer is that it’s allowed us to run weekly photo-walks which forces you to get out and take some pictures! Here’s another view from Killmar Tor from one of the recent walks; a great location that we didn’t have enough time to explore before the rain arrived!

Clearing hill fog on Over Owler Tor.

I drove out over the tops so I could check the hills and valleys for fog. The fog was localised to the hill tops, so I chose Over Owler Tor as a destination. After spending a little time in fog at the top, I dropped down and waited for the sun to break through as the fog dispersed. It was magical to see but over far too quickly.

The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II after the temporary restoration of order during the Batavian Revolution. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which used to be the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered not only as a symbol of the tumultuous histories of Germany and Europe, but also of European unity and peace.
