#MacroMondays for 5/11 #tube

profoundly inspired by dear hanna malou & martin valentin fuchs

Taken on June 9th 1986

The day before the launch of ‘Network SouthEast’ at Liverpool Street station on June 9th 1986, with Class 47 47573 receiving the name ‘’The London Standard’’.. A very small crowd of onlookers has gathered, almost outnumbered by the brass band.. The official inauguration was on the 10th, and the loco as seen here does not yet have the 'Network SouthEast' lettering applied....

The loco later lost the name, and was repainted in the red/grey ‘rail express system’ livery.. It was withdrawn in May 2001, and finally scrapped in October 2005.. Many examples have been preserved, and a few are still in use today (2026) with UK rail operating companies. The station was substantially rebuilt in the mid/late 1980s, and there are now plans for more 'improvements'...

Passenger services from here are provided by London Overground, Greater Anglia, c2c, and the Elizabeth Line..

Car 56 brings up the rear of a Waterloo and City Line train from Bank, which has just arrived at Waterloo.

Nicknamed "The Drain", the W&C Line opened in 1898, operated by the London and South Western Railway. It later passed to the Southern Railway and then British Railways / British Rail. This rolling stock was built by the Southern Railway in 1940, and became class 487 under BR. Trains were formed of motor cars with a driving cab at both ends and trailers with no driving cabs, and it was possible to operate the motor cars singly as well as in pairs with one or more trailers between. They were unusual on BR in that trains displayed red lights at both the front and back of the train, and the ends were painted white rather than yellow. They were originally painted green, and then gained rail blue, but Network SouthEast was quick to apply its new livery, albeit without the stripes being angled upwards at the ends.

The line was connected to the mainline network via a lift on the west / north side of Waterloo station, where the Eurostar platforms were later built - so before the new stock arrived the lift (which could accommodate one car at a time) was replaced by a new shaft with cranes for lifting individual cars out of the depot and onto lorries for onward movement. In the days of the lift, the stock would run under its own power on the main line to and from works when going for major exams (all except the heaviest of that work is now undertaken at Waterloo depot), and it would undergo testing on the main line. There was one difficulty with that arrangement, however - the trains were not fitted with windscreen wipers, so there was a problem if it rained.

New rolling stock (class 482) arrived in 1993, identical to London Underground's 1992 Tube Stock for the Central Line. The 1940 stock used the standard SR third rail system (so it could run under its own power on above-ground third rail electrified lines after works visits), and the new stock gave the opportunity to convert the W&C to the LU fourth rail system - and in this picture the recently-installed but (as yet) non-functional central fourth rail can be seen. The line closed in late May 1993 for removal of the old trains, delivery of the new, and final conversion to fourth rail; after testing, the line reopened in mid-July. However, operation of the new stock by BR was short-lived: under the 1993 Transport Act, ownership was transferred from BR to London Underground in April 1994 - it was already regarded as part of the London Underground system in terms of its fares structure.

Freshly painted Class 302 EMU 226 in Network SouthEast livery at Wolverton works in the late 1980s, with the traverser behind, and a Class 317 beyond that.

The Class 302s were originally BR AM2, and had been refurbished earlier in the 1980s. They were withdrawn from service by the end of the 1990s, but two driving trailers have been preserved, at the Mangapps Farm Railway Museum.

Wolverton had remained in use in recent years, for repairs and overhauls, but today (2018) faces an uncertain future, with the site planned for 'redevelopment'.

One of the better liveries in recent years was the 'Toothpaste' version of Travel West Midlands low floor livery. This was only used for a relatively short time before being replaced by the drab red and white diagonal livery.

Happiness is being home again,

Happiness is walking in the rain.

Happiness is waking with no pain.

Happiness is family to me,

Happiness in the faces, I longed to see,

Happiness is once more being free.

I wanted to call this "I can bokeh too", but decided to stick with the naming scheme. It almost feels like the sink is a person, ready to dive into a pool, and the things in the background are watching (which now that I write it out makes me sound somewhat insane)

Stomatol is a brand of toothpaste first sold in Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century. It was particularly notable as having been one of the first Swedish brands to recognise and to use the power of mass media. The brand was originally made by the soap manufacturer Grumme & Son, acquired 1985 by pharmaceutical company Cederroth AB. The company made extensive use of press, film and signs, both enamel and neon.

It is particularly known for this large advertisement sign which has been a prominent local landmark at Slussen in Stockholm since 1909. The Stomatol Sign, made from lightbulbs, not neon tubes, was the first animated advertisement sign in Sweden (one can see the toothpaste being squeezed out of the tube).

Taking this challenge very literally, lol! ; )

Thank you in advance for your views, comments, and faves. They are much appreciated!

Keighley changed its livery every Christmas in the 90s, this was one of their interesting attempts on 290 which had moved over to Harrogate in protest. It looks slightly out of place in Ripon about to head to Leeds with little custom that evening.

I forgot it when we evacuated the park.

One thing I can’t forget is the continued “toxic, hostile, repressive and harassing environment” we have here In Yosemite. Until management is held accountable this mobbing mentality will continue to flourish. We have people without boundaries spreading evil and hate; trying to depriving American Citizens of their means to support themselves. Cowards hiding in mobs, because it’s allowed in Yosemite National Park.

Ghost sign for Sozodont Toothpaste, "Cleans teeth clean, our only claim", seen on the side of a building at 43rd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, across from Grand Central Terminal, New York, New York. This sign was exposed when the building next to it was torn down. The building with the ghost sign was itself was then torn down, so this sign is lost forever.

Sozodont was created in 1859 by a New Jersey druggist, Roswell van Buskirk, and took its name from two Greek words: sozo, to save, and dentia, “teeth.” It was offered as a powder that could be mixed with water to produce a paste, or was sold in toothpaste form, as on this ad. The manufacturuer, Hall & Ruckel, claimed it could clean and preserve the teeth and harden the gums, and Sozodont remained popular for over seventy years. After the 1920s, the brand fell out of favor because it yellowed teeth in many cases.

Starting my day off right, with a healthy dose of sugar!
