Last Sunday, Chicago was hit by the Great Blizzard of 2015, the fifth largest snowfall ever to hit the city in the 150-someodd years of record keeping. My neighborhood got something like 18 inches in a snowfall that lasted 28 hours straight. And wouldn't you know it, we just happened to be out of town and missed the whole thing. We left Friday evening for this year's version of the birthday trip (more on that tomorrow) without any idea Chicago was due for anything but a light snow. We got back late last night to a city still a little socked in. We had to shovel out our spot before we could park.
Barrel racing is a high speed, athletic event that requires precision and timing. Barrel racing is primarily an event for women. Cowgirls and their horse will attempt to complete a clover leaf pattern around three barrels in the fastest time without knocking over any barrels.
The clover leaf pattern is three barrels set in a triangle formation, with the cowgirl’s being able to use either the left or right barrel as the first barrel of the pattern. The cowgirl’s run is timed by an electronic eye (a device using a laser system to record times). The timer starts as soon the cowgirl and her horse enters the arena, and will end once the pattern has been completed and the cowgirl and her horse exists the arena. The run time is dependant on several factors including arena ground conditions, the horse’s mental and physical condition, and the skill of the cowgirl.
The cowgirl and her horse will enter the arena at full speed from the alley, turn either the left or right barrel, race across the arena to the second barrel, turn that barrel, and race to the top or third barrel. The cowgirl and her horse will turn that barrel and race back down the middle of the arena and exit the arena via the alley that they entered. If a barrel is knocked over the run will have an additional five seconds added to the final time for each barrel knocked over.
Barrel racing horses are fast, agile, intelligent and very well trained.

OK, instead of going back to bed, I Photoshopped a bit. In this one I stacked 3 layers of the same image and used the "Multiply" layers command. I then used "Levels" to brighten a bit. Smart sharpen to bring out the ribs a bit better and then used the clone tool to get rid of the other saguaros. I rather like the warmth of the sunrise on the saguaro and the blue of the moon behind it.
The Bohermeen 5 Mile Road Race 2012 was held in Bohermeen, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland at 12:00 on Sunday September 9th 2012. This is the 40th running of the Rennicks cup and the 37th running of the Fr Delaney cup for the 5 mile race. The race is organised by Bohermeen Atheltic Club. The race follows a left-handed course starting and finish at the Bohermeen AC club house and track. Congratulations to all involved in the organisation - the race is a very well known race on the Irish racing calendar. It sets a very high standard in terms of organisation and competition. There is great local club support as the race forms part of the Meath Road Race League.
A 5km family fun run was also organised on the day.

Someone carved this in the rock...most likely years ago...intended for someone else's eyes...and yet it was a more meaningful message to me in that moment than I could ever put into words.

Inside the timing side crankcase is all this... stuff... Must have been stored in a barn with the barrels off at some time in the past.
The timing side main bearing is seized but I would have replaced it anyway. The drive side bearing feels OK but I will replace it.
