Thanks Explore (#165). Position (#96)
These storms were to my northwest and southwest. The one closer moved north and fizzled out but the one south eventually intensified and dropped some CG bolts in heavy rain shafts just south of the Wyoming border in Colorado.
I took 57 images to create this pano. Because of some distortion with my 8mm Fujinon lens (or any wide field of view lenses), Adobe software likes lots of adjacent images to minimize distortion. However, using only 12 of those 57 images resulted in essentially the same quality image. This test showed me that the 8mm lens has very little spherical aberration. Good to know since is costs $800.

What is a thunderstorm?
A thunderstorm is a rain shower during which you hear thunder. Since thunder comes from lightning, all thunderstorms have lightning.
Why do I sometimes hear meteorologists use the word “convection” when talking about thunderstorms?
Usually created by surface heating, convection is upward atmospheric motion that transports whatever is in the air along with it—especially any moisture available in the air. A thunderstorm is the result of convection.
What is a severe thunderstorm?
A thunderstorm is classified as “severe” when it contains one or more of the following: hail one inch or greater, winds gusting in excess of 50 knots (57.5 mph), or a tornado.
How many thunderstorms are there?
Worldwide, there are an estimated 16 million thunderstorms each year, and at any given moment, there are roughly 2,000 thunderstorms in progress. There are about 100,000 thunderstorms each year in the U.S. alone. About 10% of these reach severe levels.
First weather activity in 10 days. The thunderstorm season is quickly coming to a close in 2 weeks for Cheyenne. I might need to go to Arizona to capture any late season monsoon.
I received only 0.04 inch of rain.

I am so happy with this shot. It was hand held looking through the cockpit window and I managed to capture the moment as they say. The sunset in the background was the icing on the cake and made for such an unusual and rare photo.

Lucky for us the thunderstorm was only brief and after a few minutes it stopped raining. The sun was slowly coming back out and we continued shooting for another hour or so.

A line of three thunderstorms with lightning captured in the last storm as seen from 36,000ft. Taken over the Belgian coast looking South.
Night photography is very difficult in-flight because the low light requires long exposures which are almost impossible to keep steady because of the motion of the aircraft. We can't carry a tripod and even if we did the motion blur at 500mph would preclude its use! This was taken at 1/2 sec, ISO 1600 and RAW then brightened up and high ISO noise removed in post-processing.
