Was quite surprised to see storms develop out in the western part of Nebraska that day. The cold front had pushed into the state by early afternoon and severe storms were forming. Severe weather watches were posted for Dawson and Custer counties. Storms were moving at 10mph and I had plenty of time to catch up to them from Kearney.
Watching the storms they were build and moving north northeast and I didn't want to enter the base of this storm, I just wanted to get along side it to get the best pics in front of the storm. I wasn't disappointed. Even though this cell just went out of the severe warning, the front of this cell was majestic and I wasn't about to leave. Camera in hand I did my thing....
Storm warnings we up again for cells to the west of Dawson county, so I had about a 1/2 hour before I had to head back west to get into position for the next cells.

There's always surprises at sunset. Tonight, the low cloud layer gave way to reveal a strong thunderstorm 40 miles to my northeast moving quite slowly. The last rays of sunlight hit the top of this storm and brightened the skies as a shifted my camera to capture the effect.

Severe thunderstorms developed yesterday over the Alps. Due to relatively stable conditions they were mostly confined to the Alps/Pre-Alps and decayed fast after sunset. This made this nice view possible!

Thunderstorm with a local shower near Beidweiler, Luxembourg a few days ago. The orange core here is the reflecting light of the sunset. I don't know, does it look like a nuke to you too?
PS: Is that a wolf in the clouds?
An intense thunderstorm swept across the northwest on Tuesday night and I was almost caught out by it as I was at the summit of Winter Hill, right by the Hugh television mast when the storm came in. I had to walk through the storm to get back to my van as flashes of lightning were going off all around me.
The last flash I saw was merely feet away, but luckily it didn't tough the ground otherwise I might not have lived to get this shot, which I captured an hour or so later after getting down to safety.

In the lowest level of the atmosphere (troposphere) air cools with height. Hot surface temperatures causes a parcel of air to rise and cool adiabatically (~5.5 degrees F/1,000 ft) until it reaches total saturation (cloud base). This parcel will continue to rise and cool (3.5 degs F / 1,000 ft) if the ambient (surrounding) temperature is cooler. If the environment continues to be unstable it will force the parcel to reach the stratosphere where the atmosphere begins to warm.
Unless the thunderstorm is severe, the parcel usually stops rising and begins to spread horizontally forming an anvil (cirrus deck). However, if the parcel is still warmer than the surrounding air it will overshoot the top of the anvil until it finally reaches thermodynamic equilibrium. In this time lapse, the storm pushes through a cirrus level of clouds (remnants of an old anvil). The parcel's instability was so strong that it prevented an anvil from forming at the end of the clip as a cloud column accelerated upward.
