Domen Fekonja - pocket air

March 2011

This week we are going thirty-nine years to 1985 and to D 762 parked just off Strand Street in Dublin 1. This VanHool bus was new to CIE in 1975 and was initially based in Donnybrook Garage. It received this all-over ad for Valspar Paint in 1983. Previously Leyland Atlantean D 189 carried a similar scheme, but before it was withdrawn it was decided that another bus would carry-on wearing the ad. D 762 was chosen. Cross-city route 11 from Griffith Avenue to Closnkeagh was the route of choice for buses in advert liveries, and D 762 became common on it. In 1986 the bus moved to Ringsend Garage, and in 1995 it was withdrawn by Dublin Bus. Presumably it lost this all-over ad around the time it moved garages.

This area between Abbey Street and Strand Street was a layover area for buses for many decades. Dublin Bus pulled out in the early-2000s when the Luas Red Line was built along Abbey Street. The Jervis tram stop was built besdie it too. There have been many plans over the years since then to redevelop the site.

Valspar can trace its origins back to 1806 and to Boston in the USA.

A journey back to 2001 this week with RV 327 on the 14 to Ballinteer. This bus was delivered new to Dublin Bus in 1997, and along with RV 326 had the distinction of being the last new buses delivered in two-tone green. The bus was in Donnybrook from new and started its working career on the 14/A, where it stayed for many years. It was subsequently sold to a UK operator and was still being used in 2017, twenty years after delivery to Dublin.

The 14 at this time operated from the City Centre to Ballinteer, whereas now it is a cross-city route from Beaumont to Dundrum.

Finally it is in an all-over ad for TV 3, Ireland's first commercial national television station which started broadcasting in 1998. Nassau Street, 01/06/2001

..to a couple months ago. Forgot to post this neat consist that was on the point of a LINGAL manifest, caught in Burlington, Ia.

This week we are going back fourteen years to 2010, and to AV 393 on a snow-covered O'Connell Street with a service on route 46A to Dun Laoghaire.

Route 46A started running between the city centre and Cabinteely in 1926. Certain departures were extended to Dun Laoghaire in 1929. In 1932 the primary destination was moved to Goatstown, and in 1936 it was extended to Dun Laoghaire full time. In 1999 the Stillorgan QBC opened, and along with it the high frequency route we know now also started. In 2010 it replaced route 10 on the northside when it was extended to the Phoenix Park via the North Circular Road. It was due to be repalced by the E-Spine under Bus Connects in December 2024, but that has now been pushed back to 2025.

AV 393 was new to Dublin Bus in 2004. It was withdrawn around late-2017 / early-2018, and was sold on to another Irish operator.

2010 was a good year for snow in Dublin, with falls in January, November and December.

With the number of CSX EMDs below 100 now, it was pretty awesome to see Q506 pull up to Togany with one in the lead. Here 8130 is seen through the trees near Tontogany, Ohio.

This week we are going back forty-one years to 1983 and to to D 137 on Hawkins Street. The bus destination blinds are showing (in Irish) Rathmines and Rathgar, as well as "Via Rathmines". Along with the lack of route number, its not easy to figure out what route it was on. However, being on Hawkins Street can help deduce it was on either a 47A or 47B, and with the bus in the background on a 47B to Grange Road, we may assume it was probably on the 47A. This route started running between the city centre and Churchtown in 1932. At the time the photograph was taken, the Churchtown terminus was on Landscape Road. The route briefly disappeared around 1984, but reappeared in 1989, but this time it ran to Rockbrook. In 1999 the route, along with the 47 and 47B was completely removed from the network.

D 137 was new to CIE in 1967. It was withdrawn four months after this picture ws taken, in June 1983.

The New Metropole cinema behind the bus opened in 1972 but closed in 2016 (as the Screen Cinema). It was then demolished and a new building is currently being erected in its place.

this is from my disposable camera from January 2014! It seems like forever ago but ultimately, it really wasn't. I'm a much more different and strong person now. This picture was taken on my campus my freshman year of college.

Not a good picture, but documentation of my first attempt at a beard. Late 1981 or early 1982. God, I had hair back then!

This week we are going back 19 years to 1998. RA 246 is seen at the bus stop on Grafton Street while operating a service on route 10 to UCD Belfield from Phoenix Park. At the time the bus was only 3 years old but managed to stay in service for another decade and a half as it became a member of the tour fleet. It did lose its roof though for this new role, or at least some of it. This location ceased being a bus stop in 2014 with the start of Luas Cross CIty works. With the tram tracks coming through here it is not longer practical for buses to stop here, and this corner has been eased by extending the footpath. The bus is in an all-over ad for Eircell, one of the first mobile operators in Ireland. 1998 was when mobile phones were starting to appear, and were still a relatively novel technology at that time.

Finally, what can one say about the route 10. It was one of the more famous routes in Dublin and used by a lot of people over their lifetimes, either going to college in Belfield or the Zoo in the Phoenix Park. In 2010 the unthinkable happened when Dublin Bus abolished the route and replaced it with the 39A on the southside and 46A on the northside. 28/04/1998

As it’s throwback Thursday I thought I’d post an old photo of me in a jump suit before going out to Delmonicas in Glasgow

Different take on things after an artistic dormant state. Work + school= artistic block. Model: Calorie. Aka, hottie gf ftw.

Palm Trees and Family Sport

Thought I'd throw up this neat clip of a Chicago-Stockton stacker powering up from a stop at a rural crossing west of Dallas City, Illinois from Sep. 11, 2015.

This week we go back twenty-three years to 2002 and to MV 65 partially dressed for route 134 on Abbey Street.

Route 134 was a City Imp route that started in 1995. It ran between the city centre and McKelvey Avenue in Finglas, going via Church Street and Glasnevin. It was a replacement for route 34, but it itself was replaced around 2003 when it was merged into route 83 (the first City Imp route). The new cross-city route ran from Kimmage to Finglas.

MV 65 was one of twenty-five MV Class minibuses new to Dublin Bus between 1997 and 1998. They were a follow-on to the ME Class. They were withdrawn from service around 2004 / 2005.

This side of Abbey Street is now home to the tram tracks of the Luas Red Line.

Throwback from the 2013 Northants Young Farmers Rally

This week we go back to 1992 and RH 24 on the 41C to River Valley (or Rivervalley as it says on the destination). The bus is seen loading up on Eden Quay which for many decades was the terminus for Swords Road bus routes such as the 33, 33B, 41, 41A, 41B and 41C serving places like Balbriggan, Skerries, Portrane and Swords. When construction work started on the Luas in early 2000s these routes migrated to Lower Abbey Street and to the former terminus of 51A outside the Irish Life Centre. The route of the 41C used to follow the 41 to Swords Main Street before turning left to River Valley, whereas the 41 turned right to serve north Swords. With the development of that town in during the Celtic Tiger era, both routes were extended to Swords Manor, with River Valley becoming a through route for the 41C. The 41C was also removed from Dublin Airport.

The bus is in an all-over ad for Harp Lager. When delivered new in 1990 it was in Dublin Bus green. Before the end of 1992 it was repainted into Wedding Bus livery. The bus was withdrawn in 2002 but went on to have a further career in the Isle of Man before moving to England and serving within the fleets of Go North East and Arriva. 23/01/1992
