I ran into FEL3000 working on a legal mural behind the Michigan Central Train Station. He was extremely welcoming and more than happy to let me take pictures of him while he painted, a rare luxury indeed. The sunny morning passed quickly as we both found out we had shared acquaintances in our past. He currently is working as a tattoo artist. He has a son, who wants to grow up and paint “FEL4000, of course.” His can control was amazing. I watched seemingly random splotches of paint transform into surreal three dimensions so vivid, as SINTEX put it, you feel like you could just jump on one and start climbing.

I still have a few little bits of New Orleans to wrap up today and, probably, tomorrow, and then the drive home.

I'll start with this bland picture of a house on Dumaine Street near Rampart, along the northwestern edge of the French Quarter. According to the plaque between the windows, this is where the famed playwright Tennessee Williams lived off and on from 1962 until his death in 1983. He had long said he wanted to die in this house, but he actually choked to death on a bottlecap he was using to take barbiturates in a New York City hotel room. I'm not a barbiturate user, so I don't know the physics that would have required him to inhale a bottle cap. They teach Tennessee Williams in American high schools, but they leave out that particular detail.

For those who don't know, Tennessee Williams is one of the pre-eminent voices of the American experience of the mid-20th Century, along with guys like Arthur Miller. Tennessee Williams didn't marry Marilyn Monroe, of course, but that's something you probably could have imagined him doing. If you want to understand America of the post-THAT-war era, he's one of the guys you have to read. Or you can watch one of the movies made from his plays. Just watch Marlon Brando cry out "STELLA!" from the street beneath a New Orleans balcony a little more ornate than this one in A Streetcar Named Desire, and you'll get everything you need. One time, Tennessee Williams said, "There are only three great cities in the United States: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. All the rest are Cleveland.” As a resident of, I guess, "Cleveland" who loves New Orleans, I get what he's saying, though I'm not so sure I agree with him about San Francisco. Maybe then. Not so much now.

In high school, they made us read The Glass Menagerie, which is probably the most tepid Tennessee Williams play. They might have picked that one to protect our tender minds from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Paul Newman smoldering with Elizabeth Taylor just might break an average American high school kid.

Can you identify the three divas from musical stage and cinema screen in the blend?

To create this image, I found a suitable black and white photo of three favorite stars - either musicians or actresses - from the past 80 years or so.

After much pre-processing (to optimize "blend compatibility"), I performed a nearly even (1/3 each) blend on the three portraits.

After correcting for typical blend issues, I performed a great deal of post-blend manipulation, hand-retouching and re-blending areas to improve the illusion that this photo is of a single person. I also added a few touches just to improve the work in general.

I hope you can take a second quiz in my photos! Can you guess this time who is "in the mix"?

The Three Soldiers, also known as The Three Servicemen, is a bronze statue on the National Mall in Washington DC, commemorating the Vietnam War.

The grouping consists of three young men, armed and dressed appropriately for the Vietnam War era, purposely identifiable as Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic. It was designed to complement the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, by adding a more traditional component, and was unveiled on Veterans Day, 1984.

The statue is located next to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

What people do on Friday.

The best three shots each week, shot from the HIP, on a Friday. Inspired by John Brack’s “Collins St., 5pm” - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collins_St.,_5_pm the rules are simple;

•Do not use the view finder or LCD screen when taking aim; ‘shoot from the hip’

•Do not review, delete etc. until home.

•Only post photos taken on a Friday.

Though not a rule, unofficially this is a project about/featuring people; perhaps occasionally an animal. It is after all about the day, Friday and our relationship with the end of the (western), working week.
