"La la la la I can't hear you I can't hear you

I close my eyes so I can't see but I still see you

Can't open my mouth with three monkeys on my back"

On September 12, 2012 nearly 100 adult literacy stakeholders, policy makers, current and former award winners came to the US Senate Dirksen Office Building to celebrate the achievements of this year’s award winners. Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO), sponsor of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, and Phil Roe (R-TN), co-Chair of the US House Caucus on Adult Literacy, also joined us along with many Congressional staff persons. We were particularly pleased with the turnout this year, given the days’ events in the Middle East and the untimely death of US Ambassador to Syria, J. Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. officials there. NCL extends our sincere sympathy to their families, friends, and colleagues.

Please join NCL in congratulating our 2012 Literacy Leadership Award winners, who are:

* David Baldacci, Successful author, philanthropist, and passionate adult education advocate who founded the Wish You Well Foundation. The Foundation has funded adult and family literacy programs that help provide literacy solutions in more than 40 states.

* Ruth J. Colvin, Founder of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (now ProLiteracy). Mrs. Colvin is widely regarded as the “mother” of the US volunteer literacy movement, which has helped hundreds of thousands of adults and families to acquire literacy skills and learn English across the country.

* Save Adult Ed Campaign, A group of dedicated advocates in Los Angeles who took on the largest proposed cuts to adult education in the history of CA by conducting a rigorous, strategic, innovative, and successful public relations and advocacy campaign.

* US Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), Senator Webb introduced the Adult Education and Economic Growth Act of 2012 and has been a strong supporter of preserving appropriations in support of adult education.

Just wandering around southwestern Bolivia, within the shadow of Chile and Argentina. Ollague is the nearest "town" to these parts. It's over the border in Chile. About 300 people live there. The volcano of the same name? Sits on the border. The mirador here (where a lot of these pictures were taken) is about 2 kilometers from the border.

What else can you see in southwest Bolivia (besides the salar)? Well...a rock tree. The Laguna Colorada. In the far southwest corner of the country, the Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa, with the Desierto Salvador Dali. (The reserve touches both the Chilean and Argentine borders, and you can easily see both countries from various places around the park.).

Train tracks to nowhere -- or so they seem. Bolivia is a country that's been exploited for mining for centuries now. (Between 1545 and 1810, Potosi, the capital of this department, had a population of about 200,000. In the 16th century, it produced 60% of the silver in the entire world. During the 265 years of colonial rule, it contributed about 20% of all known silver produced in the world.). Now, Bolivia produces other things -- salt, lithium, for example -- and they ship out on these tracks, on over to the Pacific coast. (Bolivia, at one point, had coastal access, but losing a war or two...well, they lost their port.)

This is also a flyover spot for flamingos, and you can see three of the six species: James's, Chilean, and Andean. (Please don't ask me to differentiate them...I can't. I just see flamingos and that's good for me.).

Here in the high Andes, you'll also have the chance to see the four South American camelids: guanucos and vicunas (both wild species), and llamas and alpacas (both domesticated). You may even spot a viscacha (vizcacha) or two. They're native to South America. What do they look like? Well, if you let a squirrel and a rabbit get together.

All in all, this is a great place to come see some stark landscapes, and definitely worth it if you ever have the chance. I hope you do...

Since the grandkids are getting bigger, I'm feeling a bit sad that they have outgrown these things.

Not a favorite thing to do by any means, but necessary... an annual mammogram. There were three women waiting ahead of me...

Anime Midwest is a three-day weekend of fun, events, games, cosplay, panels and more. Anime Midwest is an annual three-day anime convention held the first weekend in July at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare and Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.

I'm the official photographer for the con, and an avid anime and cosplay fan. I've taken over 100,000 cosplay photos (25,000 are on Flickr!), hosted hundreds of cosplay meetups, watched over 500 anime series and built numerous props.

This is straight from the developer to the scanner with no "fixes". Finally noticed that the canonet I just received had a diffusion filter on it. I think it may be responsible for the overly soft look to most of the shots I've taken with it so far. It's off for now so once I shoot 35 more looks on the new roll I guess I'll find out...

Two in the back... but all three are on the same plant. I sure hope they are self fertile. I tried hand pollinating all three of them with a small brush. No pollen was visible to me on the brush. Perhaps it will be "ripe" in the morning!!

The roads around Yangshuo are filled with these Traction Engines, wound to a start with a handle. Absolutely beautiful things.

Although I thought that by now they'd have returned to their home in the Independent State of Samoa, I keep seeing the Three Blind Men performing here and there. You can't help but like three blind guys who are obviously enjoying themselves so much, but this seemingly harmless singing group actually stirred up some controversy last week.
