New England Central power pulls out for headroom while switching the Providence & Worcester interchange at Willimantic, Connecticut. The sculptural spools of thread on the bridge here reflect Willimantic's history as a textile manufacturing center, specializing in thread. Across the river, one of the historic mills has been turned into apartments and artists' studios.

Day 15 cream

Raided the sewing box today, lots of different colours but all on cream reels. The cream thread will probably feature again one day.

Flying into and out of Anaktuvak Pass was a beautiful and thrilling experience - and I must admit, that my heart was in my throat every now and then. The Brooks Range mountains reach peaks of over 6000 feet, which are not high for many standards, but are high in this area of the country considering the valleys are substantially lower. They also surround the area and when navigating in the area, it seemed that our pilot needed to almost "thread the needle" to get us through the pass. Now that, coupled with my husband constantly getting the 411 on the area sights and history, I was a bit anxious at times. It made me realize that I really knew nothing our my pilot, yet I allowed myself to just jump into the plane for a new adventure. I must say that in his defense, he appreared very professional and competent and obviously sensed my fear (I mean, we're in the total remote wilderness - would anyone find us??) and kept reassuring me we would be fine.

Go figure, I can go face to face with a coastal brown bear, but bumping around in the air made me a bit concerned. Oh well - if I had the opportunity to do it again - I would do it in a heartbeat!

Made from Amanda Jean Nyberg's pattern. This one does not have batting or interfacing in it. It is really nice for traveling.

Threading hair is an ancient method commonly practiced in Eastern countries, like Egypt and India. A cotton thread is pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion to trap hair in a mini lasso, plucking the hair at the follicle.

After turning the aluminum down to 22mm (0.866"), I cut threads at 1mm pitch.

Perhaps the more experienced people out there can give me a hint. When I ultimately tried this on a factory-made part, the threads wouldn't mesh.

The only variable that I can't measure/verify is the depth of the threads. I have one dinky reference from the library that says that 1mm threads should be .54127mm (21.31 thou) deep. Unless, of course, I'm misreading the very complicated diagram.

But yeah, definately tool porn.

New Stockings ♥

I've seen these around on Flickr and the internet and finally have one to call my own! All of the threads belonged to my Nana.

This is Hardanger-like, but worked over three threads rather than the four most usually used in Hardanger-work. It is perhaps closer to the Danish Hedebo of the 1840s (Hedebo embroidery changed in style over the years) and the embroidery from the Malmö region of Sweden at the same period.

This is the "Turkey Red" thread that I now keep in the freezer to guard against further deterioration. Some of the thread breaks easily because it's weakened with age. The spools that appear yellow I think used to be ecru and the ones that appear ecru used to be white and have darkened with age. See the little turkey labels that were wound into the last layer of thread?
