any of a group of large, common, solitary (nonsocial) wasps in the family Sphecidae (order Hymenoptera) that are named for the stalklike anterior (front) end of the abdomen. Thread-waisted wasps are typically more than 2.5 cm (about 1 inch) long and are parasitic on insects and spiders. The host is often numbed by malaxation, a pinching or crushing of the neck by the wasp’s pincerlike jaws, and paralyzed by the wasp’s sting. The wasp places the host’s body in a mud cell and lays an egg on it. Upon hatching, the larva consumes the host.

Members of the tribe Sphecini are often black with orange or yellow markings on the abdomen. They nest in burrows and provision their cells with caterpillars, which are eaten by the wasp larva. The mud daubers (tribe Sceliphronini) are commonly black with yellow spots and yellow legs, although some are metallic blue. They usually build several mud cells placed together in the corners of eaves or ceilings. The cells are provisioned with paralyzed spiders. Wasps of the tribe Podiini provision their cells with cockroaches, and members of the tribe Chlorionini nest in the ground and provide grasshoppers and crickets for their larvae.

I lived in central New York for about four and a half years total while I was in grad school. I had kind of a rough transition from Brooklyn (which I had loved) to Ithaca (which I did not). My one solace was that there are tons of state parks in the area with walking and hiking trails running all through them. (I once missed a doubleback point on one of my hikes and came out of the woods on to a back country road having walked 18 miles. It's a good thing I'd started out early. When I came out on the road I had no idea where I was, walked another two miles or so before I saw a woman painting her trailer and asked her where I was. When I told her where I parked my car she took pity on me and drove me back to it- 12 miles away. I was soooooo tired when I got home).

This is from the last spring I lived in Ithaca. As things were finally starting to thaw out (right about this time of year) I drove down to one of the other Finger Lakes and walked around the state park in Watkins Glen. I believe that I'd already interviewed for the job that would bring me to DC. I know that I could feel my time in the Finger Lakes coming to a close, something about which I felt some relief, but it heightened my awareness of how beautiful it is up there.
