Àlternative reality

Another shot from Gravesend's New Tavern Fort...one of a number of canon/field guns on display, this is from the (replica ?) gun carriage...

In pubs, at park benches and over garden fences, people discussing the issues of the day get down to the nuts and bolts of it, the nitty gritty, not to put too fine a point on it, the nub of it: getting down to brass tacks, the gist of it, this and that, this is it: mm hmm. There's the rub, there's no getting away from it. I'm a plain speaking man.

And that's the truth.

well, this is it.

the completion of another year of my life.

it's amazing how fast it goes - and how many things have happened.

i’ve found something I could really stick with. i broke out my mom’s 20+ year old camera and discovered the joys of film. i literally BROKE my point and shoot from over-use. i acquired five more cameras including my very first dslr. i extended my family of parrots. i discovered tumblr, the home of endless inspiration. i developed a sort of “style”. i resisted my parent’s urge to buy a nikon (haha). i obtained photoshop, and rid myself of the horrible picnik.com. i painted my room blue. i’ve befriended people I will never forget.

i have taken a picture every week for a year.

it may not seem like a lot to some people, but it does require a great deal dedication. there have been times where I really wanted to quit and i know that sounds horrible because it’s only one picture per week but seriously – as much as i like to take pictures, there have been times were i was completely uninspired and didn’t feel like doing anything let alone taking pictures. i sincerely applaud the people who did or are still doing their 365's!

so of course there a few people who i want to thank. first Fang, for her endless amount of support throughout this project and even then some! she has truly found a place in my heart and she is starting her first 52 weeks so GO LOOK!!!! :D

i also want to send a big thank you to mr. a, who supplied the pro account that allowed me to even do this project in the first place :-)

AND OF COURSE the rest of you out there – thank you so so so much for your support and the sweet testimonials. it means so much <3

as for starting another 52 weeks project, i'd totally be for it, but i'd want to start up in the spring or summer sometime so that i'd end when it's warm outside and i can make a more epic ending xD as it was, this picture is completely edited. i took the picture of me and sunny (practically froze to death in doing so) and because it was so cold i couldn't bring the birds out so i had to dub them in ;D so yeah. jasper came from one picture and she came from another. still isn't cheating because i took this picture this week. AND SPEAKING OF CHEATING I DIDNT CHEAT ONCE THIS WHOLE PROJECT :D im really proud of myself for that, ha.

cookies if you read all this. i love you all,

100/365

Well i can't believe it myself, i made it to 100 shots! I know there have been some pretty bad ones in my 365 but overall i am very pleased with what i have managed to do and hope i can continue it for another 265 days!

I had this idea since i saw the posters for Michael Jacksons tour film and thought i would save it for my 100th shot. I don't know how i managed to stay awake to do it though as i had to stay at work two hours after my shift finished, make dinner, get the studio cleared and then take the shot! Ive only just finished editing with 17 minutes left till midnight! Close call, but i made it, i would have liked to include more of my shots, including some never before seem ones iv'e done but time wasn't on my side........maybe on day 200 perhaps..???

We are away for the weekend. Big huge swim meet. Gigantic. Gargantuan. Humongous. You get the picture. So let's play...... 'whatever is in that bag that you lug around everywhere, Sam?' Come on. It's an easy game. You don't even have to guess. I'll just tell ya. It'll be fas-kinating....... I guarantee.

1. Kindle. The kindle goes everywhere. I like the ability to download a book whenever I feel the urge hit me. It hits me often, it seems. Whether I'm already involved in another book or not. Darn you amazon.

(In the midst of reading 'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern. Very intriguing. And 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I simply can't stand not knowing what everyone's talking about anymore)

2. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Slugging away at this book, but having a hard time. Perhaps because it's following Liesel Meminger and 'The Book Thief' who is a hard act to follow. Read it. Right now. The Book Thief, that is.

3. Honey nut cheerios. So I don't have to gnaw my arm off if I'm at some desolate pool devoid of food, or for when I run into either a 3 year old or a small woodland creature. They're like crack. I don't advise carrying them around.

4. My Thankful Journal. I try to be thankful for everything. And I try and write it down. It helps. Really.

5. A book of Sudoku puzzles. My new obsession.

6. 10-minute crosswords. They lie. It really takes more like 3 hours. Or perhaps as the yahoo says...... 'you're not very good at those'.

7. One of those newsprint variety puzzle books from the grocery store........ okay, okay. I have a problem. I once heard someone say 'you can never carry around too many puzzle books.' or maybe I just made that up to justify an obvious problem.

8. Knitting. There's always knitting. Even if I haven't touched it for a week. The option is there. I love options. Can you tell?

9. I do believe the ipod is in there somewhere. Battery's probably dead though. At least it will be when I actually want to use the thing.

10. Various pencils, erasers, pens, highlighters, sticky notes, a few plastic dinosaurs, probably a hot wheels car, some almonds, peanuts and motrin. Did I say I like options? I love options. I would clean a lot of this stuff out, but the moment I do that I will desperately need something that I have removed and then my day will come crashing down........ just kidding..... about the crashing part.

I remember one fine afternoon when it was half yearly holidays during my 1st Grade in School. The old black and white Solidaire TV at home was playing some random english song on DD. I think the guy singing resembled close to Eric Clapton, i don't remember well. But some bearded guy singing in a flat voice through his nose.

My grandfather and i were sitting and watching this and i exclaimed..

"Thaaththa, en thaaththa english paattu ellam raagam'e illama asingama paadara?" and my grandfather exclaimed..

(Tamil to English Translation: Grandpa, why do english people sing songs that have no melody in such an ugly fashion?)

"ammaam, avaa ellam appadi thaan. namma karnataga sangeetham madhiri ellam avaa paattu irukkadhu. appadi thaan asaingama paaduva..."

(Tamil to English Translation: Grandpa responds - Yes, english people are so.. Unlike our classical music which is melodious, their music is ugly and that's how they sing it")

The conversation ended there or rather i don't remember the rest of it. I left home and happily went to my cousin praveens place for vacation and that evening we were generally lying in bed and talking and the same conversation came up and my cousin said something along the lines of "Don't have such a narrow minded view of things..." sort of or may be he called me plain dumb on my face, which for fact i was very much.

What he did next, i have a High Definition photographic memory of. He pulled out a cassette from his dad's cassette drawer. Periappa used to have atleast 400 casettes. They filled two cupboards and drawers. It was a green colour casette with Yellow text written on it and it read "Michael Jackson - Bad".

Load it into the high end BPL Stereo double deck playback + recording system, the best of its kind money can buy and periappa was the first one to have it in my family and yes he still has it and it works flawlessly. The Synth Lead went "taan taan taan taan..." and it completely threw me off. Never in my wildest imagination did i expect something along these lines from an "asingamaana english pattu paadara vellakkaran's" (Tamil to English Translation: Ugly english music singing white man"). Over the next few days i think we listened to that casette over and over again and i was totally spell bound.

The "hee hee" and "aaaw" on "The way you make me feel" and the lines "I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love, its time that i realize.. there are some with no homes, not a nickel to loan..." from "Man in the Mirror" sends shivers down your spine thinking of it now. The bridge and mixing on the last stanza of "Smooth Criminal" left you wondering if aliens from outer space did the re-recording and mixing for that track. What differently i saw with MJ was that everybody sings the song, he emotes. That is a gift. Not many artists emote, like MJ does.

Today is the 25th of June, 2010. Its precisely a year now, i fail to come to terms with the fact that he is dead and evil bastards like Karunanidhi are still alive. Life is unfair, life is definitely "The Bitch" you can ever see. I feel robbed, still. I'm reminded of the scene from Passion of the Christ where Jesus is hit with a whip that has sharp blades with hooks and it digs into his skin and rips and peels of flesh from his back and Jesus quivers in horrendous pain, that is how i feel today, very very RAW.

A few days back i was browsing this photostream and Noor Sandhu had posted an image that had profound words.

"The loneliness of the mind is more torturous than the loneliness of the heart. You see, it cannot be fooled by pleasurable company."

The Loneliness of my mind fails to be fooled by pleasurable company, despite the fact that im constantly in the company of the most pleasurable people in this current phase of my life and doing the most pleasurable things.

When Michael Jackson is on Stage and grabs the mic and sings, everyone in the audience, right from the person in the 1st row to the last guy a mile away feels he/she is having a one on one personal conversation with Michael Jackson. I heard that somewhere on an interview tape when someone said that about MJ. I feel its so true because the last song that was released of his seem's more like a personal conversation of mine that i didn't have with anyone.

WTF camera, WTF lens, who cares?

At noon today I saw one of the first screenings of the Michael Jackson film "This is It", a compilation of all the digital video footage of the rehearsals for his ill-fated 50 concert series that had been due to open in London July 13 '09. The footage was meant to be private reference material......not originally intended for documentary film. Long time Jackson collaborator and director of the concerts, Kenny Ortega, has put together a poignant & wildly exciting portrayal of what went on in those rehearsals. In many ways it is a more in-depth experience than seeing the concert itself in London might have been, had they been meant to be........for one sees the process rather than the finished product & gains true insight into the depth & breadth of Jackson's awesome creativity & wizardry as he takes both the musicians & the principal dancers on a journey that so obviously would have had a spectacular end result had he lived just 20 more days....and he does it with humility, kindness & affection for all on that journey with him, on stage & off. He looks thin & fragile but his voice is in top form & he dances brilliantly with all the passion, vigour & originality of his early days. "This Is It" runs for 2 weeks only. See it!

31st Dec 2011 (Day 365/365)

So here we are... last shot of this project! Surprisingly (or maybe not!) I'm getting very mixed feelings about it. I've been looking forward to the end for quite a long time, but it seems to have happened quicker than I expected, as if I wasn't ready for it yet.

Looking back at what happened in the last 12 months, this project seems like the best thing I could have done. It gave me the focus I needed in my somewhat messy life, and the drive to prove to myself that I could start from scratch and learn as much as I could about something I am passionate about. I'm not yet proud of my photography, but I do appreciate the journey I've made and I am amazed at how much it has enabled me to push myself out of my comfort zone just because "I had to".

Another great thing about this project is that it will give me a chance to look back at 2011 and remember the good days with my friends, family, travelling, partying, or simply enjoying each day as it comes, as well as the difficult times. I consider myself very lucky to have a trace of every single day of the year!

Now the big question is "what next?". As much as I would love to continue to push myself, I know that it wouldn't be reasonable to commit to another daily shot series. There are quite a few things I have had to put on hold to get this project finished, and I need to get back to them! I will most definitely want to continue to challenge myself, and will think of how to do this after a short break in January :)

I am extremely grateful for everyone who supported me along the way, be it my Flickr friends who've regularly commented and faved my shots, who've put a smile on my face when I was feeling down, or convinced me to stick to it when I thought I could no longer do it (and I apologise for being too busy lately to take time to comment on all your awesome shots); or my friends who don't have a Flickr account but regularly checked my work and supported me. This project wouldn't have made any sense without all of you, thank you so much for following this journey with me!

I wish you all a happy new year, and I will see you around very soon!

Hey Friends,

I hope you survived the christmas time with its delicious food as well as I did. Couple weeks ago I had a very lovely boudoir shooting with a beautiful woman! The results are my delayed christmas gifts for you. We shot round about 8hours and tried out many different setups. It made a lot of fun but was tiring as well.

Have a beautiful start in your weekend!

Cheers, Marcus

I went there anyway although it was cancelled. It was pretty empty. The only thing that reminds me that MJ was supposed to be there was this board outside and the roller skating rink inside that plays his songs. There were still many people came to visit with the hat and glove.

Hope you guys have a good weekend!
