483007 and 483006 departing Ryde Esplanade with a Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin service back in 2010. These units dating back to 1938 were withdrawn from service early in 2021.

This shot taken in 2008 sees Class 483 EMU 483009 (ex-London Undeground tube stock) approach Lake with a service for Shanklin. The train was 70 years old at the time, and will of course celebrate it`s 80th Birthday this year!

Here is one of my archive shots taken at Manchester Victoria. This unit is one of the unique 1200V DC two car class 504 third rail electric units that worked between Victoria and Bury. What made these units different is that the electric pick up was via a side contact shoe rather than a top mounted.

6 January 1985 was the final day of service on the Paris suburban line from Pont Cardinet to Auteuil. This was the penultimate stretch of the once extensive third rail network which used to spread from Paris St Lazare. The Z1500 third rail electric sets entered service in 1930 and were built by Horme et Buire, formed of a motor and trailer car. Z1529 is seen here at Passy La Muette. Six of these sets would continue in use until later in the year on the line from Puteaux to Issy Plaine, being replaced by Z5100 units converted to third rail operation until the line closed for conversion to light rail in the 1990s.
Having just departed the Pier Head, 483008 rattles along Ryde Pier, Isle of Wight, on the 25th of June 1998. The ex underground units were 60 years old at the time of this shot, which is already just a few months short of being 20 years ago!
490 505 and a class mate on a on test run at Hamburg Hbf. Class 490 has not yet entered regular service with Hamburg's third rail suburban service.
