I think it was last week that I saw this photo on eBay and I just HAD to have it because this is St Michaels during a brief period of disuse and, by the way, I didn't take this. Opened in 1864, this later formed part of, not just the CLC's main line to Manchester but also their North Liverpool Extension, running all the way initially to Aintree and, from 1884, to Southport. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Liverpool_Extension_Line
CLC stood for the Cheshire Lines Committee and was the second largest joint railway in Britain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire_Lines_Committee. Formed by the Great Northern Railway, Midland Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (later to become the Great Central Railway), this was intended to break the near monopoly held by the London & North Western Railway.
The route was closed in stages from 1952 and, eight years later, the line between Aintree and Gateacre was closed to passengers. British Rail wanted to close the line but such a big fucking stink was created that it remained open until Saturday 15 April 1972 when the last train rumbled out of a disused Central Station.
However, the line didn't remain closed for long, being re-opened in 1978 as part of the Merseyrail network. I think it was around this time when the original plaform steps were replaced by a stepped ramp, although the awnings have long fucking gone.
The reason for the title of this photo is that, for a long time 'St Michael' was the brand used by Marks & Spencer, paying homage to Michael Marks, a Russian Jew who, together with a Tom Spencer, founded the company in 1884 and I think that's why Marksies funded the re-opening...because it made use of a brand they stupidly scrapped 21 years ago.

Ericsson SH888
Originally introduced in 1998, I was given it in about 2000 by someone I used to work for who worked for Ericsson. It was one of the earliest dual-band phones and also one of the first with built in infrared. I think I managed to get it to talk to my Psion 5 once. Very solid and dependable.
Ericsson T39m
In 2001 I took out a contract with Vodafone and chose this phone to go with it. It features tri-band, Bluetooth, predictive text, GPRS and a WAP browser, nice clear screen and very good battery life. It's also very light and thin. It's seen a lot of use: I used it for just over two years I think, then I lent it to my housemate who used it for a year or so. It still works fine, though it is a little worn. One of the best phones Ericsson made.
Sony Ericsson T610
Oh dear. I don't know what came over me with this one. I thought it was time I had a new phone on renewing my contract and the T610 caught my eye with its retro styling. This was in 2003 or so. Ericsson and Sony had joined forces to make phones and my good experience with the T39 lead me to believe this one would be OK. How wrong I was. Sony brought nice styling to the partnership, unfortunately rather than combining it with Ericsson's robust content they apparently discarded it altogether. It features a colour screen which is unreadable outdoors and a camera which not only takes pointlessly small 288x352 pictures, but the sensor lends a green tint usually and the optics distort to the edge of recognition. The software is very sluggish, especially when opening the text message inbox. The keys and joystick are not great, though they're even worse when mango chutney is applied I found. Yet another negative is the level of bastardisation by Vodafone, most annoyingly that the right-hand soft key always goes to "Vodafone Live" which I hardly ever used and was not allowed to change.
Nokia 6630
Just as soon as that contract was up I got this phone. I realised my mistake and so was much more careful choosing this one. Put off Sony Ericsson I decided to switch to Nokia and to splash out some extra cash to get a fairly high end smart phone. Definitely content over looks this time, it is a bit bulbous, funny looking and bulky. After the T610 the content is a very large breath of lovely fresh air. The very first thing I did was reassign all the shortcuts on the standby screen, because I could. Features a nice bright screen which is very legible in all lighting conditions, especially with the sensor which varies the backlight brightness depending on the ambient light level. It has a 1.3MP camera with reasonable optics though like nearly all phone cameras it doesn't cope well with bright lights in the shot. Has 3G and the keys are good and responsive. The main feature though is Series 60 which is a version of the Symbian OS. There's a fair bit of software available for it, including a version of PuTTY which is very handy. It takes a reduced size dual-voltage MMC memory card, it took me a while to find a compatible one, but I eventually got a 256MB card off ebay. It didn't take too long to fill it with music, pictures and text messages. One gripe with the software implementation is the lack of integration between the Symbian apps and the phone functions, for instance the clock and calendar applications have no connection so there is a lack of sophistication in how alarms can be set, one can't have different alarms repeated on different weekdays. I'd like to be able to set alarms which switch profiles for meetings, lectures etc. One can include a person's birthday in their entry in the contacts database, but it doesn't show up on the calendar.
Nokia E70
I've just got this one. After a fair bit of research, I was seriously considering the N93 with its 3.2MP camera with auto focus and 3x optical zoom, but then I saw some results and came to the conclusion that the quality is still not that good. So Instead I went for this phone, the most exciting feature of which is the full and very nice to use qwerty keyboard, or is it the 802.11G wireless networking? Probably both equally. SSH on this phone is a joy, nethack is quite playable though the 'b' key is on the other side of the screen to the rest of the direction keys. The WLAN really is great, if I'm at home or near an accessible network (including unconfigured netgears) I can use the networking features of my phone without worrying about paying for every byte. The browser has had mixed reviews, I think it is mostly very good. It copes with just about every page, including flickr with all its javascript, and though you get a little frame view onto the entire page it always seems to be wide enough to fit the main text column without having to scroll sideways to read the text. A major problem with it is the lack of RAM. It often runs out of memory on graphics heavy pages, though sometimes just reloading helps. Quite a hassle for me is the lack of ability to download a file linked to from a page, all it can do is attempt to open it with an installed program. I can't even find a way to copy and paste the linked url nor indeed any text on a web page. Again it suffers from a lack of integration between phone and application functionality. Yesterday I looked up a restaurant's phone number on their web page and wanted to dial it, all I could do is commit it to memory, switch to the phone interface and type it in.

Typically, you think surf and you think Hawaii, California, Australia... but not quite Jamaica, right? However, I've been intrigued by the surf culture ever since I met some in Port Antonio last year. But who is surfing in Jamaica? It's not so mainstream and my research often leads me to one name: Wilmot. The Wilmots are a surfing legacy and the sport runs through their DNA. So driving in all directions, we stop at a couple of beaches.. not a surfer in sight. We ask around until we are finally told of a spot where we could find some. Of caution though we're warned "just beware of the dogs". We identify the place (our hint is the surf board lying on the ground outside), park and think for a few minutes before stepping out... where are the dogs and should we be concerned? After a few minutes I think f**k it, let's get out of this car and start walking towards the location. That's where we spot Ishack Wilmot from a distance- most of the other siblings are out or travelling. And so very generously,Ishack shares some of his time with me as we discuss surf culture in Jamaica.
"Surfing here is very different. There is no white sand, no girls on the beach, but its a bit more friendly, open and organic then other places." In comparison to other surf meccas such as California, Jamaica is less aggressive. "No one will chase you out of the water here- even if surfing becomes bigger and more popular, because the culture started between friends. For us, surfing is essentially about having fun".
Ishack, like the other Wilmots, are all born in St Thomas, by the beach. It's a fisherman's beach really, and most will credit their father, Billy Wilmot, for expanding the popularity of the sport. Today considered by many a Jamaican surf legend, Billy got into surfing in '74 after meeting Terence Muschett, who often returned to Jamaica to ride waves. Ever since, Ishack tells me that "the surf scene is growing, but very slowly". Foreigners come to visit- just not on a mass scale. They come in search of waves, but possibly more. Maybe some values that make surfing so Jamaican in character: "we always surf together, we are happy and positive, and we are welcoming" Ishack underlines with an authentic smile.
We talk about international exposure, and Ishack explains, as with his brothers, he has traveled everywhere on tournaments. But the Polynesian birth place of surf, Hawaii, is still on his to do list. He goes on to reveal that whenever he is travelling and representing Jamaica, foreigners have been extremely friendly. Ishack suspects that it has something to do with people knowing that "we are from Jamaica" and that there is something positively cool about that. He also explains that there is some truth to those who say "black people don't surf". There are not as many black surfers around the world and "Jamaica has the blackest team. We represent black people. Even the South African team will often have just one black person on their end". There is a black surfer's association in the US, but still not a common sport.
I start to look around the space that we're sitting in and notice a surf board with "Jamnesia" painted on it. The name definitely sounds familiar- its a venue for musical events. "I grew up on music and surf" Ishack lets me know. Both universes make up the Wilmot clan- Ishack himself plays the keyboards. "I grew up with a father who had a huge music collection, and given the vast selection, I can't say I was inspired by a particular artist, but rather by particular songs". What is the Wilmot musical style though? Ishack's reply is wonderful and day dreamy "People tell us that when they listen to our music, it sounds like the beach". Sigh....
Suddenly, I see three young children running towards him. They are happy, joyful and full of life, and Ishack goes on to say "there is no doubt about it, they will also grow to surf". The more we talk, the more I am feeling a certain blissful serenity in this space. As our conversation comes to an end, I ask Ishack one last question- what makes this surf camp so symbolic? In less then a split second, he replies: "The people and my dad".

I think I have made it clear that I am not a fan of Eddie Stobart so my acqusition of these models may come as a surprise, but I have other plans for them. The Atlas Editions series includes several castings that are made by Oxford Diecast but have not even been announced by Oxford yet, I believe because Atlas are funding the tooling and have exclusivity for a period. These models generally go for silly money on eBay but a bit of patience was rewarded with this pair at a reasonable enough price for repainting, so they will be joining my fairground fleet.
Is it a sin to search for those things which you fear? My purpose in this world is knowledge, and the dissemination of it.
And it is I who is to restore the fruits of my labor to the entire world.
Fear... It is something vital to us puny creatures. The instant man stop fearing is the instant the species reaches a dead end, only to sink to pitable lows, only to sit and wait apathetically for extinction.
Humans who lose the ability to think become creatures whose existence has no value. Wake Up! Don't be afraid of knowledge!
Think, you humans who are split into two worlds, unless you want the gulf between humans to expand into oblivion, you must Think!

I think if there was a prize for looking stunning in the Anatidae family, then this dude would be right up there in the top 5, infact I'd say a number 1 contender.
This is the lone male Mandarin that resides at Colwick Park, I walked all the way around the lake before I found him and surprise surprise he had hooked up with a Mallard Duck, she looked very happy with her fine fella LOL :o)
Also I think there is a slight possibility that this guy is fully aware that he has got it going on :o)
VIEW ON BLACK
Some might think this dress is too short to wear out for shoe shopping but not me!! It was actually exhilarating both walking in the mall and trying on shoes. These blue heels are not what I wore with my dress from home it is a try on. The salesman helping me told me I had nice legs so I asked him to take a snap of me. He also said that women's legs look so nice in pantyhose and I agreed. So I think he enjoyed slipping different shoes on me with his hands delicately touching my nyloned calves and feet! (Hehe) I admit I was a bit flirty trying the shoes on and walking around looking at them in the mirrors right in front of him. I do believe the poor man had quite a stiffy from it all. Not my fault !!

Jhena found a great location for a shoot - an old building that had been abandoned for years; the new owners were going renovate it; they let us shoot in it before they gutted it. Very cool setting but this was in July so it was over 100 degrees inside the building, full of dust and who knows what else. Everyone was drenched with sweat but it was worth it.
The model in this series is Jhena. She is a photographer's dream come true. Drop dead gorgeous, an awesome personality; she oozes sweetness, has a great sense of humor and adventure. Just an all around great person. My camera never gets tired of shooting with her.
