Candid shot in the market of a young lady texting.

September 25, 2016 - The following text comes from Galapagos Conservation Trust website: "The Galapagos flightless cormorant is an endemic species to Galapagos and is not only the heaviest cormorant species, but also the one which cannot fly out of 29 species. As the name suggests, they cannot fly away and are therefore confined to the lava shoreline and beaches of Isabela and Fernandina. The adults are black on top and dark brown underneath with bright turquoise eyes. They have stunted wings that are one third the size of the wingspan they would require to fly. They have four webbed toes (like all members of the cormorant family) and the females tend to be smaller than the males. Natural selection led to the species no longer having functional wings as they had very few land predators, and individuals that were better suited to swimming were more successful in passing on their genes.

Currently there are around 1,000 breeding pairs of flightless cormorants on Isabela and Fernandina. Although their wings are stunted, they are used for balance when the cormorant jumps from rock to rock along the coast. As their wings don’t produce very much oil, they have lost some of their waterproofing so after a dive they can be seen to hold their wings out in order for them to dry.

Their diet consists mainly of eels and octopus, which they reach by diving deep to the ocean floor. Unlike penguins, they do not ‘fly’ underwater, but tuck in their wings and kick with their powerful hind legs, using their flexible necks to spear octopus and fish from inside small refuges in the reefs and rocks. On the surface they sit very low in the water, with only their necks visible from a distance.

Couples perform a strange and unique courtship dance that involves them intertwining their necks whilst twirling in a tight circle. The mated pair then makes a nest a few metres from the sea out of seaweed, flotsam and jetsam.

Most eggs are laid between May and October, which are the coldest months, resulting in an abundance of marine food and less heat stress on the hatchlings. The eggs are incubated for 35 days until they hatch, after which the parents take turns to feed the chicks. Eventually the male is left to care for the chick and the female starts a new breeding cycle, which can happen up to three times in one season. When the chicks become adults, they develop the trademark blue eyes"

As far as I saw, there's no texting in Cuba. But maybe?

Early morning cross legged, smoke and text.

The text says:

"These fragments of old glass formerly filled the upper tier of the East window.

A German land-mine with parachute attached was dropped in a field between the church and the river at 9:20 in the evening of 16th September 1940. The explosion shattered the windows, displaced roof tiles and shook down plaster throughout the church. All adjacent houses suffered in the same way, but no one was hurt.

This inscription has been placed here in thankfulness to GOD for our merciful deliverance and in memory of William Grenville Boyd, Vicar 1938-1941, who collected and began arranging the old glass."

I got this text today. I assume it's a wrong number and not spam, since it's from my area code.

I hope it worked out for her to get her brows did.

Rena turned to face the intruder, fingers flying over the keys as she answered the text. Her mouth settles into a grim line and she growls softly before glancing up.

Guin is sorely tempted to make a comment about the man fitting Pera's tastes, but manages to refrain so this didn't devolve into stabbing. Though, it still could. "He does seem to lack your bantering skills... I thought that was a requirement of entry." She glances behind her at the question, but it's Rena's texting that draws her attention. "Now what?" she whispers.

Rena flips the phone open and let out a little screech of rage as she read. "That fucking, no good... " Fingers fly again. "... k if that's how you want to play," was murmured low as she virtually ignored the group.

Chi winces and cuts his eyes toward Rena, wondering what the -fuck- she was doing now.

Masha's floofy coyote tail brushes against Guin's legs as she startles in reaction to Rena's irate explosion and she lifts a hand to cover her pounding heart. "What?"! she huffs.

Guin is tempted to snatch the phone out of her hand to see what's going on.

Rena looks up. "I have to meet someone at the TZ, I won't be long, can we meet up somewhere? Snake Pit, maybe?"

Gott mit uns.

Aus Deutschlands großem Kriege.

Schwere Kämpfe bei Ypern.

Text:

God with us.

From Germany"s Great War.

Heavy fighting near Ypres.

From AI:

During the First World War, a total of five major battles took place in the region around the Belgian city of Ypres (Ieper) between 1914 and 1918, which are considered the epitome of trench warfare with heavy losses:

.

The most important battles at a glance:

First Battle of Flanders (Oct.–Nov. 1914): Marked the end of the "race to the sea". The transition from mobile warfare to trench warfare strengthened the front arc of Ypres.

Second Battle of Flanders (Apr.–May 1915): Notorious for the first massive use of poison gas (chlorine gas) by German troops.

Third Battle of Flanders (Passchendaele, 1917): One of the bloodiest offensives of the war. Heavy rains turned the battlefield into a muddy desert; the losses of both sides totaled over 800,000 men.

Fourth Battle of Flanders (April 1918): Also known as the "Battle of the Lys" during the German Spring Offensive.

Fifth Battle of Flanders (Sept.–Oct. 1918): The final Allied offensive to liberate Belgium.

The sign in the background refers to Keen's Mustard - although this is not actually the origin of the phrase "As keen as mustard". The phrase was first recorded in text in 1672; by their own advertising, Keen's Mustard was "First manufactured in the reign of George 2nd AD 1742".

Founded in 1938, York Castle Museum is housed in buildings that used to form the prisons.

The prison buildings were built throughout the c18th - the county jail between 1701-05 by William Wakefield, the Assize Courts between 1773-77 and Female Prison between 1780-83, both by John Carr (1723–1807). By the c19th these buildings were deemed unsuitable and a new prison, in a Tudor Gothic style, was designed by Peter F Robinson (1776–1858) and George Townsend Andrews (1804–55). York Prison was closed in 1929 and demolished in 1935, leaving behind Clifford's Tower and the c18th buildings which were then repurposed as the museum by Dr John Lamplugh Kirk (1869-1940).

Basilio Pavón Maldonado, one of the supreme autorities of hispanomusulman and mudejar art relates this with the toledan 14th century plasterworks integrating human figures in vegetation. The three most famous ones are mentioned above in the Spanish text, wher you can also see the reference to the article, fully available online.

I have had my eye on all of the amazing quilted tote bags popping up on blogs and Flickr all summer. I put together the log cabin-ish side of this tote about a month ago. I picked out four text prints and then just reached into my scrap basket for whatever would fit. Then, after getting some amazing text charms from my Flickr friend, I put together the patchwork side. It is a really large tote, which was exactly what I wanted. I lined it with a print from IKEA that I got for $0.99/yard. I quilted the patchwork side with 1/4" straight lines and the other side with a stipple stitch. It held a ton of supplies, perfect for entire days spent at the park with the kiddos.

Originally I put the straps on too far towards the boxed end, so I took them off and reattached them. Much better!!
