The history of Vienna
Corporate state and Austrofascism 1934-1938
The burning of the Palace of Justice
The burning of the Palace of Justice fire (photo taken soon after construction of the Palace of Justice 1881) heralded the end of the First Republic
The burning of the Palace of Justice on July 15, 1927 after a miscarriage of justice in connection with violent demonstrations in Schattendorf (Burgenland), the collapse of the Creditanstalt, taking place in 1931, the largest bank in the country, and finally, the after a voting mishape on March 4, 1933 by the government alleged self-dissolution of parliament marked the way towards an authoritarian regime, which formally was based on the - factually incorrect - War Economy Empowering Act (Kriegswirtschaftliches Ermächtigungsgesetz). Against the dictatorial course of the Christian Social Chancellor rose in a three-day civil war around the February 12, 1934 part of the already forbidden Defence Organization Social Democratic Republican Protection League. After Engelbert Dollfuss, since 1932 Chancellor and Foreign Minister, had banned in 1933 the Nazi Party, the Communist Party and the Protection League, was the Social Democratic Party after the February Struggles 1934 also hit by the ban.
Mayor Karl Seitz - not involved in the civil war - in February 1934 was violently thrown out from the City Hall, the Social Democratic city senate dissolved (including state government). The "corporate state" (Ständestaat) eliminated the role of Vienna as one of the nine provinces and declared Vienna for "city directly under federal government control". As mayor the Christian Social Richard Schmitz by the dictatorship government was appointed without elections.
Dollfuss and after him Kurt Schuschnigg created the Fatherland Front, that in the time of Austro-fascims quasi assumed the role of a single party. The authoritarian corporate state ruled initially with emergency decrees and decreed on May 1, 1934 the Constitution of the "State of Austria". To create jobs, was in 1935 with the construction of the High Road to the Kahlenberg begun, the Viennese vantage mountain. Socialists, Communists and National Socialists organized themselves underground. The attempted Nazi coup in July 1934 (July Putsch), in which Dollfuss was murdered in the Federal Chancellery at Vienna Ballhausplatz was unsuccessful. Equally unsuccessful remained the in March 1938 - much too late - by Chancellor Schuschnigg undertaken attempt to mobilize the Social Democratic workers of Vienna against the Nazis. Although in Floridsdorfer (21st district of Vienna) worker home still a "conference of confidential people" was held, in which the support of the government against Hitler was decided, it was already too late to stop the Nazis.
